CHAPTER 7 – THE SON SHE CHOSE

CHAPTER 7 – THE SON SHE CHOSE
The first explosion had not been meant to kill.
It had been meant to announce.
Gabriel Rossi had arrived.
Rain pounded the rusted roof of the abandoned warehouse as black-clad security teams surrounded every exit.
Inside, Vincent Moretti smiled.
"So," he murmured, adjusting his cuffs. "The boy finally came."
Rosa remained tied to the chair.
"He always comes."
Vincent chuckled.
"Let's see if love makes him careless."
Outside, Gabriel raised one hand.
No shouting.
No dramatic speeches.
Only a single command.
"Bring my mother home."
Within seconds, flash-bang grenades shattered the warehouse windows.
The lights died.
Smoke rolled across the concrete floor.
Moretti's gunmen fired wildly into the darkness.
The Rossi teams moved with disciplined precision.
The gunfire lasted less than two minutes.
When the smoke cleared, most of Moretti's men had surrendered.
The rest had fled.
Vincent, however, still stood beside Rosa, pressing a pistol against her temple.
Gabriel stepped through the haze.
His suit was soaked from the rain.
His face showed no fear.
Only determination.
"Let her go."
Vincent smiled.
"You've built quite an empire."
"I didn't build it."
Gabriel took another step.
"My mother did."
Vincent laughed.
"You'd sacrifice everything for a woman who isn't even your blood?"
Gabriel stopped.
"So you know."
"I know everything."
Vincent tossed the adoption papers onto the floor between them.
"She lied to you for forty years."
Gabriel looked at the papers.
Then at Rosa.
She was crying.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I wanted to tell you."
Gabriel's eyes softened.
"You think I care about blood?"
His voice echoed through the warehouse.
"The woman who stayed awake through my fevers..."
"The woman who worked two jobs so I could go to school..."
"The woman who taught me never to strike the weak..."
"That's my mother."
He looked directly at Vincent.
"Family is chosen every day."
Rosa closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face.
For the first time since the kidnapping began...
She smiled.
Vincent's smile disappeared.
He had expected doubt.
He had expected anger.
Instead...
He had strengthened the bond he hoped to destroy.
In a desperate move, Vincent shoved Rosa aside and raised his pistol.
Before he could fire—
A single shot echoed through the warehouse.
Vincent's weapon flew from his hand.
Enzo lowered his own pistol.
"It's over."
Surrounded from every side, Vincent slowly raised his hands.
Within moments, federal agents—who had been coordinating with the Rossi security team after receiving intelligence on the kidnapping—entered the warehouse and took Vincent and the surviving kidnappers into custody.
Gabriel ignored everyone else.
He ran to Rosa.
Carefully cutting the ropes from her wrists, he knelt before her.
"I'm sorry I was late."
She cupped his face with trembling hands.
May you like
"You came."
"Always."
