CHAPTER 6 – A MOTHER'S SECRET

CHAPTER 6 – A MOTHER'S SECRET

Three hours later.

Rain hammered the streets of South Boston.

Inside an abandoned warehouse near the harbor, Rosa Rossi sat tied to a wooden chair.

Her wrists were bruised.

Her gray hair had fallen loose from its neat bun.

Across from her stood Vincent Moretti.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Expensive overcoat.

A man whose smile never reached his eyes.

"You raised an impressive son."

Rosa answered quietly.

"I raised a good son."

Vincent laughed.

"That's not what Boston says."

She looked directly at him.

"I don't care what Boston says."

"I care what God says."

Vincent studied her for several moments.

Then sighed.

"You know..."

"I expected Gabriel to become his father."

She smiled faintly.

"He became better."

Miles away...

Gabriel's command center had been established inside Rossi Headquarters.

Maps covered the walls.

Phones rang nonstop.

Security footage played across twelve monitors.

Enzo entered carrying a worn cardboard box.

"We found this in your mother's attic."

Gabriel frowned.

"What is it?"

"She hid it."

Inside were faded photographs.

Immigration papers.

Old letters.

And a newspaper clipping from thirty-five years earlier.

Gabriel unfolded it.

His breathing stopped.

The headline read:

LOCAL WOMAN SAVES POLICE OFFICER DURING GANG SHOOTING

The photograph showed a much younger Rosa.

Covered in blood.

Carrying an injured officer to safety.

Gabriel stared at the picture.

"I never knew."

Enzo continued searching the box.

Then froze.

"Boss..."

"What?"

"There are adoption papers."

Gabriel looked up.

"What?"

Enzo slowly handed him the document.

Gabriel Rossi.

Adopted.

Age: Four.

The room fell silent.

Gabriel read the page again.

Then again.

His entire world shifted beneath him.

He whispered,

"Mama..."

The woman he loved more than life itself...

Had never shared his blood.

Yet she had never once treated him differently.

She had chosen him.

Every meal.

Every scraped knee.

Every bedtime story.

Every lesson.

Every sacrifice.

She had chosen him.

Again and again.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down his face.

Enzo quietly looked away.

At that same moment...

Inside the warehouse...

One of Vincent Moretti's men hurried toward him.

"Boss."

"What?"

"We've got movement."

Vincent smiled.

"Gabriel?"

The guard nodded.

"He's coming."

Vincent looked at Rosa.

"Your son loves you very much."

She smiled despite the ropes cutting into her wrists.

"No."

She answered softly.

"I'm the lucky one."

Vincent frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Rosa lifted her head with quiet dignity.

"Because the little boy I chose..."

"...grew into the man the whole city fears."

A distant explosion suddenly shook the warehouse.

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

Darkness swallowed the building.

Outside...

Dozens of black SUVs surrounded the docks.

And Gabriel Rossi stepped out into the rain.

This time, he had not come as a businessman.

He had come as a son.

And every man standing behind him knew one thing:

Before dawn...

May you like

Either Rosa Rossi would come home.

Or Boston would never forget the night two empires went to war.
