CHAPTER 3 – THE PRICE OF A NAME

CHAPTER 3 – THE PRICE OF A NAME
For three full seconds, no one moved.
The wedding band rested on the white linen tablecloth beside the untouched champagne glass like a verdict already delivered.
Vivienne stared at it.
Then at Gabriel.
Then back at the ring.
A nervous laugh escaped her lips.
"Very funny."
No one laughed with her.
She forced another smile.
"Gabriel, enough. You're embarrassing me."
His expression never changed.
"No."
His voice was quiet enough that everyone leaned forward to hear.
"You embarrassed yourself."
The silence became unbearable.
Richard Hartwell rushed toward the head table, nearly tripping over a chair.
"Gabriel," he said with an uneasy smile, "she's exhausted. Weddings are stressful. She didn't mean—"
Gabriel raised one hand.
Richard stopped speaking immediately.
"I've listened to excuses all my life."
He looked at Vivienne.
"I'm no longer interested in hearing them."
Vivienne's pride flared.
"You can't seriously be ending a marriage over an old necklace."
Gabriel slowly turned the broken pendant over in his palm.
"No."
"I'm ending it because of what you revealed."
She folded her arms.
"And what exactly did I reveal?"
"You believe wealth creates value."
Another pause.
"My mother taught me the opposite."
Across the ballroom, Rosa quietly dabbed at her tears.
She wished Gabriel would stop.
She hated conflict.
She hated becoming the center of attention even more.
She whispered softly,
"Gabriele... enough. She's young."
Gabriel looked at her with the same tenderness he had carried since childhood.
"Mama..."
"You defended me my entire life."
His voice almost broke.
"Tonight it's my turn."
Rosa lowered her eyes.
She knew there would be no changing his mind.
Richard Hartwell felt sweat collecting beneath his tuxedo collar.
His empire had already collapsed once.
If Gabriel abandoned the alliance now...
Everything was finished.
He hurried closer.
"This misunderstanding can be fixed."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Can it?"
Richard nodded too quickly.
"I'll make Vivienne apologize."
Vivienne spun toward her father.
"What?"
"You apologize. Right now."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"You want me to apologize to a waitress-looking old woman?"
The words echoed through the ballroom.
Several Hartwell relatives closed their eyes.
Richard's face turned white.
"Vivienne!"
"What?"
"You've already sold me once."
Her voice cracked with years of resentment.
"Now you expect me to beg?"
"I married him because you needed money!"
The confession exploded across the ballroom.
Gasps erupted.
Journalists invited as society guests discreetly reached for their phones beneath the tables.
Even Gabriel blinked once.
Not because he hadn't known.
Because she had admitted it so openly.
Vivienne laughed bitterly.
"Let's stop pretending."
She pointed around the room.
"None of this is about love."
She pointed at Gabriel.
"You bought my family's future."
She pointed at herself.
"I was the payment."
Richard looked ready to collapse.
"Enough."
"No!"
Years of humiliation poured out.
"I've spent twelve months listening to everyone tell me how lucky I am."
"Lucky?"
She laughed again.
"I traded my life for my father's debts."
Then she looked at Gabriel.
"And somehow I'm the villain?"
The ballroom remained silent.
Because for the first time all evening...
Someone besides Vivienne was telling the truth.
Gabriel answered calmly.
"No."
"You became the villain when you chose cruelty."

Rosa slowly approached.
Her knees still hurt from kneeling.
She placed one wrinkled hand gently on Gabriel's arm.
"Gabriele."
He looked down.
"Forgive."
He frowned.
"Mama."
"Forgive."
She smiled sadly.
"Hurt people hurt people."
Vivienne stared at her.
After everything...
This woman still wanted peace.
For a brief moment—
Something resembling shame flickered inside her.
Then it vanished.
She looked away.
"I don't need pity."
Rosa answered softly,
"No."
"You need kindness."
The sentence landed harder than any insult.
Near the entrance, Enzo received a vibrating message.
He glanced at the screen.
His eyes narrowed.
He immediately walked toward Gabriel.
"Boss."
Gabriel accepted the phone.
One photograph.
Then another.
Then another.
His jaw tightened.
"What is it?" Enzo asked.
Gabriel silently handed the phone back.
Enzo's face darkened.
The Hartwell financial records.
Transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Fake charitable foundations.
Someone had been investigating Richard Hartwell for months.
And the evidence was devastating.
A second message arrived.
Federal warrants approved.
Estimated arrival:
Twelve minutes.
Enzo looked toward the ballroom entrance.
"This reception is about to become crowded."
Gabriel nodded once.
"Good."
Vivienne noticed the exchange.
"What happened?"
No one answered.
She walked toward Gabriel.
"What are you hiding?"
He looked at her with unexpected sympathy.
"You should sit down."
Her stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer—
The ballroom doors burst open.
Every conversation stopped.
Men and women wearing dark navy jackets entered in perfect formation.
Not police.
Federal investigators.
Gold badges flashed beneath the chandeliers.
The lead agent removed an envelope.
"Richard Hartwell?"
Richard's knees nearly gave out.
The room exploded into whispers.
The agent continued.
"You are hereby served with federal warrants involving securities fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice."
Vivienne felt the floor disappear beneath her.
"No..."
Another agent approached.
"We also have court authorization to freeze all remaining Hartwell assets effective immediately."
Richard whispered,
"This can't be happening."
The lead investigator looked around the ballroom.
"It already is."
Every camera in the room suddenly came alive.

The wedding reception had become breaking news.
And it had only just begun.
