CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET THAT ASHLEY NEVER WANTED FOUND

CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET THAT ASHLEY NEVER WANTED FOUND
The flash drive contained more than altered medical records.
It contained Ashley's entire insurance policy.
Hidden folders.
Encrypted spreadsheets.
Private emails.
Voice recordings.
Photographs.
Every crime she'd carefully separated over the last three years had been stored in one place.
Perhaps because she trusted no one.
Not even herself.
Forensic analysts worked through the night.
By morning, Detective Collins walked into the interview room carrying a thick evidence binder.
"You need to see this."
Michael opened the first page.
Ashley had hired private investigators long before his marriage collapsed.
They had tracked Emily's schedule.
Photographed her meetings.
Followed her grocery trips.
Recorded her medical appointments.
Michael's stomach tightened.
Emily hadn't been watched after the divorce.
She'd been watched before it.
The second folder was even worse.
It contained fake bank statements.
Digitally edited security footage.
Forged jewelry appraisals.
Invoices paid to actors.
Actors.
Michael blinked.
"What actors?"
Collins slid over another photograph.
Michael immediately recognized the man.
The supposed lover from the parking-garage pictures.
His real occupation:
Commercial actor.
He had never met Emily before Ashley paid him.
The affair had been staged.
Every photograph.
Every smile.
Every angle.
Everything.
Michael covered his face.
He remembered standing in his office, throwing those photographs across his desk while Emily cried and begged him to listen.
He had called them undeniable.
Now he realized...
They had been professionally produced.
Then Collins opened the final folder.
"This is the one that matters most."
Inside lay an audio recording transcript.
Kevin Rhodes had secretly recorded Ashley months earlier.
Perhaps because he no longer trusted her.
Michael read the transcript silently.
Ashley:
"Once Emily disappears, he'll marry me."
Kevin:
"What if she's pregnant?"
Ashley:
"Even better."
Kevin:
"Why?"
Ashley:
"A child he never knows about is leverage forever."
Michael couldn't keep reading.
His hands shook violently.
Detective Collins quietly finished the transcript aloud.
Ashley:
"By the time he learns the truth, the children won't know him... and he'll never forgive himself."
Silence filled the room.
She hadn't merely wanted Michael's fortune.
She had wanted something far crueler.
She wanted him emotionally broken.
Dependent.
Isolated.
Easy to control.
An arrest warrant was signed before noon.
Ashley Whitmore was charged with multiple counts including fraud, evidence tampering, conspiracy, identity-related offenses, and obstruction of justice.
When officers arrived at her penthouse...
She was gone.
Her passport.
Gone.
Her jewelry.
Gone.
Her computer.
Gone.
Only one thing remained on the kitchen island.
A handwritten note.
Just six words.
"You'll never find me first."
Detective Collins folded the note carefully.
Then her phone rang.
She listened for only a few seconds before looking up at Michael.
"We have a lead."
"Where?"
"The airport."
Michael grabbed his keys without another word.
Across the city, a private jet was already taxiing toward the runway.
Ashley believed she was about to escape.
She had no idea that someone already waiting inside the aircraft wasn't a pilot...
May you like
It was an undercover federal agent carrying a warrant with her name on it.
The trap she had spent a year building for others was finally closing around her.
