CHAPTER 4 — THE DNA TEST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 4 — THE DNA TEST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Michael visited the church every day for the next week.

He never asked to hold the twins.

He never forced conversation.

He simply brought groceries.

Formula.

Diapers.

Medicine.

Then he left.

Sometimes Emily accepted them.

Sometimes she didn't.

He never argued.

Trust, he was learning, wasn't rebuilt with apologies.

It was rebuilt with consistency.

On the eighth day Emily finally spoke.

"They're named Noah and Lily."

Michael smiled for the first time in weeks.

"They're beautiful."

Emily looked down.

"They have your eyes."

He almost cried.

David arrived that afternoon carrying a sealed envelope.

"The DNA lab rushed the results."

Emily looked nervous.

Michael didn't.

He already knew.

David handed over the report.

Probability of paternity:

99.999999%.

Michael was the biological father of both children.

He stared at the page.

Not because he doubted it.

Because the paper represented every stolen moment.

Every first smile.

Every sleepless night.

Every birthday.

Every fever.

Every lullaby.

Gone.

Emily quietly broke the silence.

"You never asked for a DNA test during the divorce."

Michael nodded.

"I believed Ashley."

"You believed everyone except me."

She wasn't wrong.

Before either could speak again, David's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

Michael stood.

"What happened?"

David lowered the phone slowly.

"The former IT administrator is missing."

"What?"

"His apartment has been emptied."

"When?"

"This morning."

Michael felt a chill.

Someone else knew they were getting close.

Meanwhile, across town...

Ashley sat in the back seat of a black sedan.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

A nervous man beside her wiped sweat from his forehead.

"I deleted everything you asked."

Ashley looked out the window.

"Not everything."

"What do you mean?"

"The investigator found Linda Brooks."

The man's face turned pale.

Ashley spoke softly.

Almost kindly.

"Mistakes become expensive."

"I can fix it."

"You already failed."

The car stopped beside an abandoned warehouse.

Ashley finally turned toward him.

For the first time...

There was no warmth in her eyes.

Only calculation.

"You know too much."

The man realized too late why she'd asked him to come alone.

Outside...

Another car quietly pulled into the shadows.

Someone inside lifted a camera.

Pressed Record.

And captured everything.

May you like

A witness Ashley never saw.

The game had just changed.
