CHAPTER 5 — THE VIDEO THAT COULD DESTROY A DYNASTY

CHAPTER 5 — THE VIDEO THAT COULD DESTROY A DYNASTY
The camera never shook.
Whoever held it had done this before.
From inside the parked sedan across the street, a long-range lens stayed fixed on the abandoned warehouse.
Ashley stepped out of her car without a hint of hesitation.
The IT administrator, Kevin Rhodes, followed, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds.
He looked like a man who had finally realized the money had never been worth the fear.
The timestamp in the corner of the recording read:
8:43 P.M.
The audio was faint, but one sentence carried clearly through the evening air.
Ashley stopped walking.
"If Michael finds out who paid you," she said evenly, "everything falls apart."
Kevin swallowed.
"I deleted the hospital records."
"You recovered them."
"I had no choice."
"You always have a choice."
Kevin's voice cracked.
"I never agreed to hurt children."
Ashley took one slow step closer.
"No."
"You only agreed to erase their father."
The words froze him.
Then another voice interrupted.
"Police! Don't move!"
Blue lights exploded across the warehouse walls.
Ashley didn't panic.
She smiled.
In one fluid motion, she reached into her handbag, pulled out a small flash drive, and hurled it toward a drainage ditch beside the building.
An officer sprinted after it.
Another tackled Kevin.
Ashley calmly raised both hands.
"I've done nothing wrong."
Even in handcuffs, she looked composed.
As though this were merely an inconvenience.
By sunrise, the news had spread through Chicago's business circles.
Whitmore Industries' future Mrs. Whitmore questioned in evidence tampering investigation.
Reporters surrounded the police station.
Cameras flashed nonstop.
Michael arrived through a private entrance.
Detective Sarah Collins met him inside.
"There isn't enough to charge her yet."
Michael frowned.
"What?"
"The video proves she met Kevin."
"It doesn't prove conspiracy."
"What about the hospital records?"
"The defense will argue administrative error."
"The shell company?"
"They'll call it a charitable donation."
Michael felt the familiar frustration rising.
Ashley had hidden behind legal gray areas for years.
Nothing alone was enough.
Everything together painted the truth—
but courts preferred proof over patterns.
Detective Collins leaned forward.
"We need motive."
Michael answered immediately.
"My money."
Collins shook her head.
"No."
"Control."
Meanwhile, Emily had no idea any of this was happening.
She spent the morning helping prepare breakfast at the church shelter.
Noah giggled as mashed bananas somehow ended up on his own forehead instead of in his mouth.
Lily laughed so hard she nearly tipped backward in her high chair.
Emily smiled.
It was the first genuine smile anyone there had seen in weeks.
Then the church director hurried inside.
"Emily..."
She looked worried.
"There are reporters outside."
Emily's smile disappeared.
"They found us?"
"I'm afraid so."
Within minutes cameras surrounded the shelter gates.
Questions flew from every direction.
"Did Mr. Whitmore abandon your children?"
"Are the twins really heirs to the Whitmore fortune?"
"Did Ashley threaten you?"
Emily turned away immediately, pulling the stroller behind her.
She had spent an entire year protecting Noah and Lily from shame.
She wasn't about to let television cameras become their first memories.
Michael arrived less than ten minutes later.
The reporters instantly rushed toward him instead.
Microphones surrounded his face.
"Mr. Whitmore!"
"Did you know about the twins?"
"Is your engagement over?"
"Were divorce documents obtained through fraud?"
Michael looked past every camera.
Emily stood at the church doorway holding both children.
Their eyes met.
For the first time...
He didn't think about shareholders.
Or headlines.
Or damage control.
He stepped directly to the microphones.
"I have a statement."
The crowd fell silent.
"My former wife never abandoned me."
Every reporter started recording.
"I abandoned her."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
"I believed lies without giving the woman I loved the chance to tell the truth."
He paused.
"My son and daughter spent their first year without a father because I failed them."
Another pause.
"I cannot change that."
"But I will spend the rest of my life trying to deserve the opportunity."
Across the courtyard, Emily lowered her eyes.
She wasn't ready to forgive him.
But for the first time...
She believed he finally understood what he'd done.
That afternoon Detective Collins called.
"We found the flash drive."
Michael stood.
"And?"
"It wasn't destroyed."
"What was on it?"
Collins' expression changed.
"Hundreds of files."
Michael's heartbeat quickened.
May you like
"Hospital records?"
"Much worse."
