CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Police sirens surrounded Blackstone Mill within minutes.

The sniper escaped.

Victoria survived.

Barely.

She was rushed into emergency surgery under heavy guard.

As detectives searched the warehouse...

They found something no one expected.

A hidden basement.

Inside...

Children's toys.

Fresh food.

Blankets.

Someone had been living there recently.

Mercer's stomach tightened.

"This wasn't prepared tonight."

Ethan looked around.

"This place was planned."

"For weeks."

Maybe months.

Then...

One officer called from the far corner.

"We found something!"

Hidden beneath loose floorboards was a metal lockbox.

Inside...

Dozens of photographs.

Most were of Ethan.

Leaving work.

Walking the estate.

Meeting investors.

Standing beneath the old oak tree.

Someone had been watching him.

Long before Maria ever arrived.

Then Ethan found one final photograph.

His hands froze.

It showed Lily asleep against his chest beneath the oak tree.

Taken the very first day they met.

Someone had been hiding nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

At Cole Memorial Hospital...

Victoria finally regained consciousness.

Mercer entered her room alone.

"You won't survive another attempt."

She stared at the ceiling.

"I know."

"Tell me who ordered this."

Tears rolled silently down her face.

"It started as money."

"But then..."

"It became revenge."

"Against Ethan?"

She nodded.

"And Lily?"

Victoria squeezed her eyes shut.

"They never planned to hurt her."

"They just needed leverage."

"Who?"

Victoria whispered a single name.

Mercer's expression changed instantly.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

"You have to protect Ethan."

"And the little girl."

"Because if he learns the truth before you're ready..."

"...he'll never forgive himself."

Meanwhile...

Back at the mansion...

Maria sat inside Lily's empty playroom holding her daughter's blanket.

Every toy remained exactly where Lily had left it.

The unfinished block tower still stood near the window.

She finally broke.

Sobbing into the tiny blanket.

Ethan silently sat beside her.

Neither of them spoke.

Words had become too small.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

Mercer.

His voice was urgent.

"We found Lily."

Maria shot to her feet.

"Where?"

Mercer hesitated.

"She's alive."

Both of them burst into tears of relief.

"But..."

Ethan's heart sank.

"What?"

"We also discovered something connected to Lily's kidnapping..."

"...that ties directly to your father's death twelve years ago."

Silence.

Then Mercer spoke the sentence that changed everything.

"The person behind this didn't choose Lily by accident."

May you like

"They chose her..."

"...because they knew a secret about your family that you've never been told."
