CHAPTER 5 – THE RANSOM THAT WASN'T ABOUT MONEY

CHAPTER 5 – THE RANSOM THAT WASN'T ABOUT MONEY
The estate became a fortress within minutes.
Police cruisers lined the front gates.
State troopers sealed the surrounding roads.
Every security camera within a twenty-mile radius was being reviewed.
Yet Lily had vanished as if the earth had swallowed her.
Maria stood in the middle of the mansion's grand foyer, clutching Lily's tiny yellow sandal that had been found near the open gate.
It was all she had left.
"I should've been watching her..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I promised I'd never let anything happen to her."
Ethan stepped toward her.
"This isn't your fault."
She shook her head violently.
"It is."
"If I hadn't brought her here—"
"You brought her somewhere you believed was safe."
His own words cut him.
Because he had believed the same thing.
And he had been wrong.
Detective Ryan Mercer transformed Ethan's library into a temporary command center.
Maps covered the walls.
Surveillance footage played on multiple monitors.
Officers moved in and out, reporting every possible lead.
A technician suddenly called out.
"We found the van."
Everyone rushed toward the screen.
The white van appeared on a traffic camera less than three miles from the estate.
The license plate was fake.
But something else caught Ethan's attention.
"Stop."
The image froze.
The driver's wrist rested on the steering wheel.
A distinctive emerald bracelet glimmered beneath the sleeve.
The same bracelet.
Victoria Lang.
"She's still wearing it," Ethan whispered.
Mercer nodded grimly.
"She's getting careless."
An hour later, Victoria's abandoned van was discovered in an empty warehouse district outside town.
Inside, officers found...
Lily's stuffed rabbit.
Maria collapsed the moment she saw it.
"No..."
"No..."
"It was her favorite..."
Ethan caught her before she hit the floor.
Mercer searched the vehicle carefully.
No blood.
No signs of violence.
No fingerprints except Victoria's.
Then another officer shouted from the front seat.
"Detective!"
Mercer hurried over.
A small envelope rested on the dashboard.
Inside was a single handwritten note.
If Ethan Cole wants the little girl alive...
Come alone.
Midnight.
Blackstone Mill.
Bring no police.
There was no demand for money.
No account number.
No ransom amount.
Mercer frowned.
"This was never about cash."
Ethan folded the note.
"It was about me."
That evening, Maria stood outside the mansion chapel.
She hadn't entered a church in years.
But tonight...
She had nowhere else to put her fear.
"I don't care what happens to me," she whispered through tears.
"Just let my little girl come home."
Behind her, Ethan quietly approached.
"I received another message."
Maria turned instantly.
"What does it say?"
He hesitated.
"They only want me."
"You can't go."
"I have to."
"It could be a trap."
"It is a trap."
"Then don't."
He looked toward the darkening sky.
"If I don't..."
"...they'll punish Lily for it."
Maria grabbed his arm.
Her hands were shaking.
"I've already lost everything once."
"My husband died before Lily was born."
"I buried him with twenty-seven dollars in my bank account."
"Please..."
"...don't make my daughter lose someone else she trusts."
Those words struck Ethan harder than anything else that day.
Someone else she trusts.
Without realizing it...
He had become important to a child.
And that terrified him.
Midnight.
Blackstone Mill.
The abandoned factory stood beside the river like the skeleton of another century.
Rain dripped through broken windows.
Mercer had begged Ethan not to go alone.
He ignored him.
Inside the mill...
A voice echoed from the darkness.
"You actually came."
Victoria Lang stepped into the light.
She looked nothing like the polished assistant from the Cole estate.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her makeup streaked by tears.
A pistol trembled in her hand.
"Where's Lily?"
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"You still think I'm in control?"
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"I was hired."
"By who?"
She looked away.
"I can't say."
"You framed Maria."
"They told me to."
"They?"
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
"You don't understand."
"If I talk..."
"...I'll be dead before sunrise."
Before Ethan could respond—
A gunshot exploded through the warehouse.
Victoria's eyes widened.
A dark stain spread across her shoulder.
She collapsed.
A masked sniper had fired from outside.
"DOWN!" Ethan shouted.
More shots shattered the windows.
May you like
Someone wanted Victoria silenced.
Forever.
