CHAPTER 4 – LILY DISAPPEARS

CHAPTER 4 – LILY DISAPPEARS

Maria was released before midnight.

Every charge was dropped.

Detective Mercer personally apologized.

"I've seen innocent people before," he admitted.

"But I've never seen someone framed this carefully."

Maria simply nodded.

She was too tired to speak.

Outside the station, Ethan waited beneath an umbrella.

"Lily?"

Maria asked immediately.

"She's asleep."

Maria nearly collapsed with relief.

"My housekeeper stayed with her."

Maria whispered,

"Thank you."

Ethan looked at her.

"No."

"I'm the one who's sorry."

She frowned.

"For what?"

"For bringing you into a family that mistakes power for permission."

The following morning...

News of the failed accusation spread through the mansion.

Employees whispered openly.

For the first time in years...

People questioned Vivian Cole.

She hated it.

Vivian entered her office and slammed the door.

Gregory Hall stood silently nearby.

"You embarrassed me."

"No, Madam."

"That woman embarrassed me simply by existing."

Hall couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Maria did nothing."

Vivian stared out the window.

"You don't understand."

"My son is changing."

"He canceled three board meetings."

"He skipped a charity gala."

"He smiles."

She turned slowly.

"And it's because of them."

Across the estate...

Lily chased butterflies through the rose garden while Ethan walked beside her.

"Slow down," he laughed.

"You'll catch them."

"No."

"They catch me."

He smiled.

Children had strange wisdom.

Then Lily suddenly stopped.

A white van rolled slowly past the estate fence.

Its engine idled.

The driver's window lowered.

A smiling woman leaned out.

"Lily?"

The little girl looked up.

"I know your mommy."

She held out a teddy bear.

"Come see."

Ethan was twenty yards away.

Answering a phone call.

For just five seconds.

Five seconds.

When he looked back...

Lily was gone.

Only the abandoned teddy bear lay beside the open gate.

Maria's scream echoed across the entire estate.

"LILYYYYY!"

Ethan's heart stopped.

Security alarms erupted.

Guards ran in every direction.

Gregory Hall grabbed a radio.

"Lock every gate!"

Too late.

The white van had already disappeared onto the highway.

Detective Mercer answered Ethan's emergency call within seconds.

"What happened?"

Ethan could barely force the words out.

"They took her."

There was silence.

Then Mercer asked the question no one wanted to hear.

"Mr. Cole..."

"...who would kidnap a three-year-old?"

Ethan slowly turned toward the mansion.

Toward the second-floor window.

Where his mother stood behind the curtains...

Watching.

Without a trace of surprise.

Only a calm, unreadable expression.

And for the first time in his life...

May you like

Ethan wondered if the woman who raised him had just crossed a line from cruelty...

...into something far darker.
