CHAPTER 7: THE MAN WHO CHOSE MONEY OVER MERCY

CHAPTER 7: THE MAN WHO CHOSE MONEY OVER MERCY

The office was almost completely dark.

Only the Nashville skyline glowed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, outlining Thomas Briggs as he stepped into the room.

In one hand, he held a pistol.

In the other, a small remote.

"You always did admire dramatic entrances," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady.

Thomas smiled.

"I learned from watching billionaires."

He looked older than he had that morning.

Not physically.

Morally.

The polished attorney who had protected my company for eleven years was gone. Standing before me was a man whose greed had finally consumed every remaining piece of his conscience.

"You hid the files."

"Yes."

"You framed Maria."

"She was convenient."

"You threatened a three-year-old."

For the first time, his smile faded.

"I never planned to hurt the child."

"You expected me to believe that after sending those photographs?"

"I needed you distracted."

"You needed an innocent woman destroyed."

Thomas shrugged.

"Collateral damage."

The words made my stomach turn.

"You know what your problem has always been, Ethan?"

"You think you're different from your father."

He laughed quietly.

"You're not."

"You inherited his company."

"His fortune."

"His arrogance."

"And most importantly..."

"You inherited his belief that people are tools."

His words stung because, once, they had been true.

Years ago, I would have sacrificed anyone to protect a deal.

Maria.

Richard.

Anyone.

But something had changed.

A little girl with paint on her hands had changed it.

"I was that man," I admitted.

"I'm not anymore."

Thomas shook his head.

"Too late."

He pressed the remote.

Somewhere below us, a loud explosion echoed through the parking garage.

Car alarms screamed.

Sprinklers activated.

Employees began running through the corridors.

Chaos.

Exactly what he wanted.

He raised the pistol.

"I'll walk out during the evacuation."

"They'll assume you died in the explosion."

"No one will ever know."

Before he could pull the trigger—

A voice echoed behind him.

"Drop the weapon!"

Detective Aaron Hayes.

Thomas spun instinctively.

That single hesitation was enough.

I lunged.

The gun fired.

Glass shattered behind me.

We crashed into the conference table, struggling for control of the weapon.

Thomas fought with desperate strength.

Years of fear poured into one final attempt to escape.

Then another shot rang out.

Silence.

The pistol slid across the floor.

Thomas collapsed.

Shot in the shoulder by Detective Hayes.

Police officers flooded into the office seconds later.

Within moments, handcuffs clicked around Thomas's wrists.

As they led him away, he looked back at me one last time.

"You'll lose everything."

I looked at him calmly.

"No."

"I almost lost everything."

"There's a difference."

The investigation uncovered far more than anyone imagined.

Thomas had spent four years secretly selling confidential corporate information to rival developers.

Millions of dollars had flowed through shell companies overseas.

The Horizon Ridge theft had simply been his largest operation.

When the contractor demanded more money, Thomas arranged his murder.

Richard Vaughn's meeting with the contractor?

Exactly what Richard claimed.

He had hired the man months earlier for a legitimate security upgrade, never knowing Thomas would later exploit that connection to frame him.

Richard was completely innocent.

Maria never should have been a suspect.

Sophia never should have been threatened.

The police arrested everyone connected to Thomas's network within two weeks.

For the first time in months...

The nightmare was over.
