CHAPTER 4: THE TRAP INSIDE MY OWN EMPIRE

CHAPTER 4: THE TRAP INSIDE MY OWN EMPIRE
By sunset, the investigation had changed completely.
The missing files no longer looked like a simple theft.
They looked like an inside job.
Someone had known exactly where every camera pointed.
Someone had known Maria's schedule.
Someone had known that a hardworking single mother would become the easiest person in America to blame.
The realization made me sick.
I called every executive into the boardroom that evening.
No assistants.
No attorneys.
Just the seven people with access to the Horizon Ridge project.
Richard Vaughn.
Olivia Chen.
Marcus Bennett.
Daniel Ross.
Linda Parker.
My legal adviser, Thomas Briggs.
And me.
I placed the recovered security photo onto the conference table.
"Does anyone recognize him?"
No one answered.
Too quickly.
Almost rehearsed.
I watched faces instead of words.
Richard frowned.
Marcus crossed his arms.
Olivia leaned forward.
Thomas avoided looking at the photograph altogether.
Interesting.
I changed the subject.
"Effective immediately, the Horizon Ridge deal is suspended."
Several executives reacted instantly.
"What?"
"We can't."
"We'll lose the investors."
I remained calm.
"Unless..."
I paused deliberately.
"...the buyer agrees to tomorrow's revised bid."
Silence.
There was no revised bid.
I had just invented it.
If someone inside this room had stolen the files for a competitor...
That lie would become tomorrow's rumor.
And rumors always traveled toward the guilty.
That night I couldn't sleep.
The mansion felt heavier than ever.
As I walked downstairs for water, I noticed something unusual.
A light.
Inside the servants' hallway.
Harold was speaking quietly with another employee.
When they saw me, both stopped immediately.
"What is it?"
Harold hesitated.
"Mr. Cole..."
"I wasn't sure whether to tell you."
"Tell me what?"
He handed me a plain white envelope.
"No return address."
Inside was a single photograph.
Maria.
Walking Sophia into a neighborhood daycare.
Someone had circled the little girl in red marker.
Across the bottom, one sentence had been typed.
STOP DIGGING.
NEXT TIME THE CHILD DISAPPEARS.
Every drop of blood drained from my face.
This wasn't corporate espionage anymore.
Someone was threatening a three-year-old.
Without another word I grabbed my car keys.
Harold followed.
"Where are you going?"
"To Maria."
"You shouldn't go alone."
"I don't care."
Rain poured across Nashville as I drove faster than I ever had.
Every traffic light felt like an enemy.
Every minute felt stolen.
When I reached Maria's apartment building...
Blue police lights were already flashing outside.
An ambulance stood beside the curb.
Neighbors crowded the sidewalk.
Children were crying.
My heart stopped.
I jumped from the car and pushed through the crowd.
"Maria!"
She turned.
Alive.
Holding Sophia tightly against her chest.
Both were soaked from the rain.
"What happened?"
Maria's hands trembled so violently she could barely speak.
"I..."
"I looked away for one minute."
"Sophia was feeding stray kittens."
"Then..."
"She was gone."
I looked at Sophia.
The little girl buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
A police officer stepped toward me.
"She was found three blocks away."
"Who found her?"
The officer pointed toward an elderly homeless veteran sitting beneath the awning of a closed convenience store.
"He said a man tried to lead the child into a white van."
"The little girl kept saying..."
The officer looked down at his notes.
"'Mr. House Man says strangers don't get hugs.'"
My chest tightened.
I had said those words casually only once.
She had remembered.
The officer continued.
"The witness scared the suspect away."
"They escaped before we could identify the vehicle."
I slowly unfolded the threatening photograph from my pocket.
The officer's expression hardened immediately.
"This changes everything."
Yes.
It did.
Because whoever had stolen my company's secrets...
Was now willing to kidnap an innocent child to keep those secrets buried.
And I finally understood the terrifying truth.
The attack had never been about money alone.
May you like
It was about making sure Maria disappeared...
Before she remembered the one detail that could identify the man who entered my office that night.
