CHAPTER 5: THE DETAIL EVERYONE MISSED

CHAPTER 5: THE DETAIL EVERYONE MISSED

The detective took the photograph from my hand and studied it beneath the flashing blue lights.

His jaw tightened.

"You should have brought this to us immediately."

"I received it less than fifteen minutes ago."

He nodded once.

"My name is Detective Aaron Hayes."

"We're treating this as attempted child abduction and witness intimidation."

Maria looked up sharply.

"Witness?"

Hayes turned toward her.

"Mrs. Delgado..."

"It's Ms. Delgado," she corrected automatically.

He gave an apologetic smile.

"Ms. Delgado, I need you to think very carefully."

"The man who entered Mr. Cole's office..."

"Did you notice anything unusual?"

Maria closed her eyes.

"I already told everyone."

"I didn't see his face."

"Forget the face."

"The smallest detail matters."

"The way he walked."

"The smell."

"The shoes."

"The voice."

She pressed trembling fingers against her temples.

For nearly a minute, no one spoke.

Then Sophia quietly tugged on her mother's sleeve.

"Mommy..."

Maria looked down.

"The noisy keys."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Sophia pointed toward the apartment entrance.

"The jingly man."

Maria's eyes suddenly widened.

"The keys."

She grabbed my arm.

"He had too many keys."

I frowned.

"So?"

She shook her head rapidly.

"No."

"Maintenance workers usually separate their keys."

"This man..."

"He carried every key on one huge ring."

She held her hands apart to show the size.

"They made a loud metal sound."

Detective Hayes immediately wrote it down.

"Anything else?"

Maria's breathing quickened.

"I remember because..."

She looked embarrassed.

"...he apologized after bumping into me."

"He said..."

She searched her memory.

"'Heavy, isn't it?'"

"He laughed."

"And?"

"He smelled..."

She stopped.

My heart pounded.

"What?"

"Cigars."

"Very expensive cigars."

Hayes looked directly at me.

"How many executives at your company smoke cigars?"

I didn't need to think.

"Only one."

Richard Vaughn.

My chief financial officer.

The next morning I said nothing.

Not to Richard.

Not to the board.

Not even to my attorneys.

If Richard was innocent, accusing him too soon would destroy his career.

If he was guilty...

He would make a mistake.

I intended to let him.

By noon, my fake announcement about a "revised bid" had already leaked to three competing developers.

Exactly as I had hoped.

Only seven people had heard that lie.

The circle was shrinking.

Detective Hayes requested permission to monitor every executive's communications.

Within hours, another discovery surfaced.

Richard had deleted more than two hundred text messages.

Not suspicious by itself.

Except the deletions happened only after Maria became the prime suspect.

Hayes leaned back.

"He's cleaning."

"But cleaning isn't the same as innocent."

That afternoon I visited Maria.

She had refused to return to work.

I couldn't blame her.

After someone tried to take her daughter, no paycheck mattered.

She opened the apartment door cautiously.

Sophia peeked around her leg.

"Mr. House Man!"

She ran into my arms before Maria could stop her.

"You came back."

"I said I would."

Children noticed promises.

Adults noticed contracts.

I was beginning to understand which mattered more.

Maria looked exhausted.

"I don't think I can ever work again."

"You don't have to decide today."

"They almost took my little girl."

"I know."

"They knew where she was."

"I know."

"They'll come back."

I met her eyes.

"No."

She gave me a tired smile.

"You can't promise that."

"No."

"I can promise something else."

"What?"

"I won't let you face this alone."

For the first time since this nightmare began...

She believed me.

That evening, Detective Hayes called.

"We have something."

Security cameras from a private cigar lounge downtown had captured Richard meeting with a man wearing a maintenance uniform.

The footage was dated three days before the theft.

I stared at the screen.

Richard handed the man an envelope.

The man handed Richard a security badge.

Neither knew the cameras were recording.

Hayes smiled for the first time.

"Now we have probable cause."

Police searched Richard's home before sunrise.

Everyone expected to find the stolen files.

Instead...

They found nothing.

No documents.

No flash drives.

No hidden cash.

Richard sat calmly in his living room.

"I've been waiting."

Hayes narrowed his eyes.

"You knew we'd come."

"I knew Ethan would eventually stop trusting emotions."

He looked directly at me.

"I didn't steal your files."

"Then explain the meeting."

"I hired a contractor."

"For what?"

Richard smiled.

"Ask him."

"The contractor is dead."

The room froze.

"What?"

"Car accident yesterday morning."

Detective Hayes immediately called dispatch.

Ten minutes later he lowered the phone slowly.

"It wasn't an accident."

The contractor had been found inside a burned vehicle outside Nashville.

Dental records confirmed his identity.

Execution.

Professional.

Someone was erasing witnesses.

Richard folded his hands.

"You see?"

"If I were guilty..."

"I wouldn't still be alive either."

May you like

For the first time...

I wondered whether we had been chasing the wrong man.
