CHAPTER 7 — The Real Heir

CHAPTER 7 — The Real Heir

The front door opened before anyone could stop it.

The elderly man entered as though he had been invited.

He carried himself with quiet confidence, his polished cane tapping against the marble floor.

Alexander stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled politely.

"My name is Edward Blackridge."

Nathan's eyes widened.

The founder of Blackridge Strategic Holdings.

The man whose investment empire had quietly swallowed family businesses across three continents.

Grace stood from her chair.

Her expression hardened.

"So..."

she whispered.

"You finally came yourself."

Edward inclined his head.

"I promised your husband I would."

Alexander looked from one to the other.

"You knew each other?"

Edward sighed.

"We were partners once."

The room froze.

Alexander stared at his mother.

Grace nodded slowly.

"Before your father built Sterling Technologies... Edward and I built everything together."

Edward placed the sealed envelope on the table.

"I warned your husband that one day secrets become debts."

Alexander opened the envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Another trust document.

And a DNA report.

He frowned.

"This isn't possible."

The birth certificate belonged to Emily.

The trust named her—not Alexander—as the primary successor to the original Sterling estate.

Alexander looked at Grace.

"You made Emily the heir?"

Grace nodded.

"She was older."

Alexander wasn't angry.

Only confused.

"Then why was I raised to lead everything?"

Grace smiled sadly.

"Because Emily never wanted power."

Edward quietly added,

"She wanted freedom."

Alexander suddenly understood.

Emily had rejected the business.

He had embraced it.

Their parents simply honored each child's choice.

Edward continued,

"But someone else wanted both."

"Richard."

Edward nodded.

"He believed controlling Emily meant controlling the trust."

Grace closed her eyes.

"He underestimated my daughter."

Just then—

Nathan's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed instantly.

"Sir..."

"What happened?"

"Our investigators intercepted Richard's private jet."

Alexander stepped forward.

"And Emily?"

Nathan's voice grew quiet.

"She's alive."

Relief swept through the room.

"But Richard escaped."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Find him."

"We already are."

Three hours later...

Richard Halston stood alone inside an abandoned estate overlooking Lake Michigan.

He calmly packed documents into a metal case.

He had expected Alexander to discover the truth.

He simply hadn't expected it so quickly.

A voice echoed behind him.

"You always run."

Richard slowly turned.

Emily stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Strong.

Holding a small recorder.

Richard smiled.

"You've become brave."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"I've become tired."

Richard laughed.

"You think one recording will destroy me?"

Emily pressed play.

Richard's own voice filled the room.

Every bribe.

Every forged document.

Every threat.

Every plan to manipulate Vivian into destroying the Sterling family from within.

Years of secret conversations.

Richard's smile disappeared.

"You recorded me."

"For eleven years."

Police sirens suddenly echoed outside.

Richard looked toward the windows.

Dozens of vehicles surrounded the property.

He looked back at Emily.

"You planned this."

"No."

Emily smiled softly.

"My brother did."

Alexander stepped into the room beside federal investigators.

Richard understood.

The game was over.

He slowly placed the metal case on the floor.

"I suppose..."

he said quietly,

"...your father finally won."

Alexander answered,

"My father never stopped fighting."

Richard was arrested without resistance.

As officers led him away...

He looked at Edward Blackridge.

"You betrayed me."

Edward replied calmly,

"No."

"You betrayed yourself the day greed became more important than family."

Richard lowered his head.

May you like

For the first time in decades...

He had nothing left to say.
