CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The frozen image remained on the screen.

No one spoke.

Alexander stepped closer until he was only inches from the monitor.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"...Richard?"

Nathan stared in disbelief.

"It can't be."

But everyone in the room recognized him.

The silver hair.

The sharp jawline.

The distinctive scar beneath his left ear.

There was no mistake.

The man standing outside Sterling Mansion the previous evening was Richard Halston—Alexander's former legal adviser.

The same Richard Halston whose funeral Alexander had attended six months earlier.

The same man whose death certificate had closed every investigation into the missing Sterling Trust records.

Harold Benson slowly removed his glasses.

"I never believed he died."

Alexander turned sharply.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Harold sighed.

"Because there wasn't a single piece of evidence."

Nathan rewound the footage again.

Richard appeared only for three seconds.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then disappearing before Alexander's car entered the gate.

Alexander narrowed his eyes.

"He wasn't there to help Vivian."

Nathan nodded.

"He was supervising."

An hour later...

Sterling Technologies' cybersecurity division occupied the mansion's conference room.

Screens filled every wall.

Maps.

Financial transfers.

Phone records.

Digital archives.

The head investigator, Elena Brooks, looked exhausted.

"We've connected Richard Halston to seventeen shell companies."

Alexander folded his arms.

"Anything else?"

Elena hesitated.

"Yes."

She projected a family tree onto the screen.

Everyone leaned forward.

At the top...

Grace Eleanor Sterling.

Beneath her...

Alexander.

Then several connected companies.

Finally—

A corporation highlighted in red.

Blackridge Strategic Holdings.

Alexander frowned.

"Explain."

Elena zoomed in.

"For almost four years, Blackridge has quietly purchased companies that supply Sterling Technologies."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"They're surrounding us."

"Exactly."

Harold spoke quietly.

"If they controlled the family trust..."

"They would control the business."

Alexander finally understood.

This had never been about an old village house.

It had never been about inheritance.

It had been about his entire corporate empire.

Vivian sat silently in the corner.

Every sentence crushed another illusion.

She had believed she was securing her future.

Instead...

She had become the perfect weapon against her own family.

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Inside a private penthouse...

Richard Halston calmly poured himself a glass of whiskey.

The television showed financial news.

No mention of him.

Officially...

He remained dead.

A young assistant entered.

"They recovered the security footage."

Richard smiled.

"I expected they would."

"They've identified you."

"I expected that too."

The assistant looked nervous.

"Should we leave the country?"

Richard laughed.

"No."

He walked toward the window overlooking the skyline.

"Alexander is brilliant."

"But brilliance has one weakness."

The assistant frowned.

"What weakness?"

"He still believes every battle is fought in a courtroom."

Richard's smile widened.

"This one isn't."

Back at Sterling Mansion...

Grace requested to speak with Alexander alone.

They sat together in the old library.

The room smelled of leather-bound books and cedar wood.

Grace stared into the fireplace.

"There is something I never told you."

Alexander looked at her.

"I'm listening."

She reached into her handbag.

From a hidden compartment...

She removed a tiny brass key.

Not the large estate key.

This one was much smaller.

"What does it open?"

Grace smiled sadly.

"The room your father forbade anyone to enter."

Alexander frowned.

"There isn't a room in this house I haven't seen."

Grace shook her head.

"Not this one."

She led him upstairs.

Past the family portraits.

Past the guest suites.

Into the oldest wing of the mansion.

At the end of a narrow hallway stood an oak bookcase.

Grace pressed a carved wooden rose.

A soft click echoed.

The entire bookcase slowly swung outward.

Alexander stared.

Behind it...

A staircase descended into darkness.

"I never knew this existed."

"Your father wanted it forgotten."

Grace handed him the key.

Together...

They walked downstairs.

Dust floated through the beam of Alexander's flashlight.

The room beneath the mansion wasn't a cellar.

It was an archive.

Hundreds of locked cabinets.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Letters dating back nearly seventy years.

Alexander whispered,

"My God..."

Grace nodded.

"This is the real Sterling history."

In the center of the room stood a massive iron safe.

Grace inserted the key.

The heavy door creaked open.

Inside rested only three items.

A handwritten journal.

A leather folder.

A cassette recorder.

Alexander picked up the journal.

The first page bore his father's handwriting.

If someone is reading this... Richard has already betrayed us.

Alexander's breath caught.

He turned another page.

Every page detailed secret meetings.

Hidden transfers.

Bribes.

Attempts to steal the Sterling Trust.

His father had documented everything.

Including one shocking sentence.

Richard isn't working alone.

Alexander looked toward his mother.

"You knew?"

Grace nodded slowly.

"Your father discovered the truth two weeks before he died."

"Who was Richard working with?"

Grace closed her eyes.

"He never had the chance to tell me."

Alexander continued reading.

Near the final pages...

His father's handwriting became weaker.

As though written during illness.

Then...

One unfinished sentence.

Never trust—

The words stopped.

The page ended with an ink stain.

Nothing more.

Alexander whispered,

"He died before finishing it."

Grace gently nodded.

That evening...

Nathan rushed into the archive holding a tablet.

"Sir."

Alexander looked up.

"What happened?"

Nathan swallowed hard.

"Our investigators found Richard."

Alexander stood immediately.

"Where?"

Nathan turned the screen around.

Security footage from thirty minutes earlier.

Richard Halston had entered a private airport outside Chicago.

He wasn't alone.

Walking beside him...

Was a woman wearing dark sunglasses.

Alexander stared.

Then his face went white.

"No..."

Grace looked at the screen.

Her hands began trembling.

Because the woman beside Richard...

Was someone the entire family had buried eleven years earlier.

May you like

Alexander whispered,

"...Emily?"
