CHAPTER 4 — The Hidden Alliance

CHAPTER 4 — The Hidden Alliance
The following morning, Sterling Mansion felt different.
No servants spoke above a whisper.
Every employee had heard rumors.
No one knew the details.
But everyone knew something enormous had happened.
At precisely nine o'clock, seven black sedans entered the front gate.
Lawyers.
Auditors.
Private investigators.
Alexander had summoned every person necessary to uncover the truth.
Grace appeared downstairs wearing a simple cream-colored dress.
For the first time in years...
She didn't look frail.
She looked like the woman who had once negotiated million-dollar land deals before most people believed women belonged in boardrooms.
The room fell silent as she entered.
Harold Benson stood respectfully.
"Mrs. Sterling."
She smiled.
"Harold."
"It's been twenty-one years."
"I know."
"You haven't changed."
Grace laughed softly.
"My mirror disagrees."
Even Alexander noticed something astonishing.
The lawyers weren't treating his mother like a client.
They were treating her like a legend.
Harold placed several files on the table.
"We've completed the preliminary review."
Grace nodded.
"And?"
Harold removed his glasses.
"Someone has been attempting to dismantle the original Sterling Trust for almost three years."
Alexander looked sharply toward Vivian.
She remained expressionless.
Harold continued.
"Unfortunately..."
"It wasn't done alone."
The room froze.
Alexander frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Harold opened another folder.
"Several outside firms submitted repeated requests for trust information."
"Who hired them?"
Harold slid a document across the table.
Alexander read the company name.
He had never seen it before.
Blackridge Strategic Holdings.
Nathan's face changed instantly.
"I know that company."
Alexander looked up.
"How?"
Nathan answered quietly.
"They specialize in hostile family acquisitions."
Grace's gentle expression disappeared.
"They're vultures."
Harold nodded.
"They don't buy companies."
"They infiltrate families."
Alexander slowly looked at Vivian.
"Do you know them?"
She hesitated.
Exactly one second.
Too long.
Alexander saw it.
"So you do."
Vivian inhaled.
"They approached me."
The room exploded.
Alexander slammed both hands onto the table.
"They WHAT?"
"They said they could help protect our future."
"Our future?"
"They told me your mother planned to cut us out."
Grace stared at Vivian in disbelief.
"I've loved you like my own daughter."
Vivian couldn't meet her eyes.
"They showed me documents."
Harold interrupted.
"Fake documents."
Vivian turned.
"What?"
Harold handed her copies.
"The signatures are fabricated."
"The trust amendments never existed."
Vivian looked from page to page.
Her face slowly lost color.
"They told me..."
Her voice trembled.
"They said Grace wanted to leave everything to charity."
Grace whispered,
"Oh, child..."
Vivian's eyes filled with tears.
"I believed them."
Alexander remained motionless.
Then he asked the question that mattered most.
"If you believed you were protecting us..."
His voice hardened.
"...why humiliate my mother?"
Vivian broke.
She covered her face.
"Because they told me if she felt weak..."
"...she would sign faster."
The room fell into horrified silence.
Nathan's phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Alexander.
His expression turned grave.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"Our forensic team recovered the deleted security footage."
Alexander nodded.
"Play it."
The video appeared on the large screen.
Everyone watched.
Grace was quietly watering flowers.
Vivian entered carrying documents.
She smiled warmly.
Offered tea.
Sat beside Grace.
Then...
Her smile vanished.
She grabbed Grace's phone.
Demanded signatures.
Threatened to send Grace back to the village alone.
Finally...
Grace fell to her knees trying to retrieve the phone.
The room watched in silence.
Vivian began crying before the footage ended.
"I didn't..."
She sobbed.
"I didn't realize how cruel I looked."
Alexander didn't answer.
Because he had noticed something else.
Just before the camera was deleted...
Another person briefly appeared reflected in the foyer mirror.
A man.
Standing outside the front door.
Watching.
Nathan froze the image.
"Enhance."
The face became clearer.
Harold whispered,
"My God..."
Alexander stared at the screen.
He recognized the man instantly.
He had attended their wedding.
He had toasted their marriage.
He had been a trusted family adviser for fifteen years.
May you like
And according to company records...
He had died six months earlier.
