CHAPTER 3: THE BUTTON LILY PRESSED

CHAPTER 3: THE BUTTON LILY PRESSED
Rachel's smile was the last thing Deborah wanted to see.
It wasn't the smile of a nurse.
It wasn't even the smile of someone caught doing something wrong.
It was calm.
Certain.
Almost relieved.
"There you are," Rachel said softly, locking eyes with Deborah beneath the hospital bed. "You've made this much harder than it needed to be."
Lily gasped.
Thomas stirred in Deborah's arms, his tiny face scrunching as though he sensed the fear surrounding him.
Michael rushed forward.
"Rachel, don't!"
She threw up one hand, stopping him.
"If you come any closer, I'll scream that you're attacking a nurse."
"You've lost your mind."
"No," she answered. "I've lost patience."
Deborah slowly crawled backward, shielding Thomas with her body.
"You stay away from my son."
"Our son?" Rachel laughed bitterly. "No. Your son. The child who ruined every promise Michael made to me."
Michael's face twisted in horror.
"I never promised you a child."
"You promised me a life."
"I promised nothing except that I was ending an affair that never should have happened."
The words hit Deborah like another betrayal.
She had suspected.
Now she had heard it directly from him.
An affair.
Her husband had betrayed her while she was enduring injections, surgeries, miscarriages, and years of infertility treatments.
Tears filled her eyes, but there was no time to grieve.
Rachel reached toward the edge of the bed.
"Come out, Deborah."
"No."
"I only want to talk."
"You brought a syringe."
"For something that would help you."
"Don't lie."
Rachel's pleasant expression vanished.
"You've always been the obstacle."
Suddenly, Lily moved.
She didn't scream.
She didn't cry.
She quietly reached her hand toward the side rail of the hospital bed.
Earlier that morning, while Deborah slept, another nurse had shown Lily something.
"If Mommy ever needs help and no one's here," the kind nurse had said, "press this red button. It calls us immediately."
Lily's fingers searched beneath the rail.
There.
The red emergency call button.
She pressed it.
Nothing happened for one terrifying second.
Then—
A piercing alarm sounded throughout the room.
Lights above the doorway began flashing.
Rachel's head snapped toward the sound.
"What did you do?"
Lily answered through trembling lips.
"I called people who actually help moms."
Within seconds, footsteps pounded down the hallway.
Rachel's face hardened.
She reached into her pocket.
The syringe.
Michael lunged.
"No!"
He grabbed her wrist just as she tried to pull it free.
The syringe flew from her hand.
It skidded across the tile floor.
Deborah watched it slide beneath a cabinet.
Rachel slapped Michael across the face with surprising force.
"You ruined everything!"
"No," he shouted. "I ruined everything months ago."
She shoved him again.
He stumbled into the bassinet.
The empty bassinet tipped but didn't fall.
At that exact moment, the door burst open.
Three nurses rushed inside, followed by a hospital technician.
"What is happening?"
Rachel immediately changed her expression.
"My patient is having a postpartum psychological episode," she said quickly. "The husband became violent."
One of the nurses looked confused.
"Where's the patient?"
Rachel pointed.
"She's hiding under the bed."
Every eye turned downward.
Deborah slowly crawled out holding Thomas tightly.
Lily followed beside her.
The room fell silent.
The senior nurse stared at Deborah's terrified face.
Then she noticed something else.
Deborah wasn't connected to her IV anymore.
The line had been disconnected.
She looked at Rachel.
"Why is Mrs. Collins on the floor?"
Rachel answered smoothly.
"She became paranoid."
Before anyone else could speak, Lily stepped forward.
Her small voice shook, but every word was clear.
"She's lying."
The room froze.
"My mommy hid because that nurse wanted to hurt her."
Rachel forced another smile.
"Honey, you're confused."
"I'm not confused."
"You've had a scary day."
"I heard you."
Rachel's smile faltered.
"I heard you tell my dad that Mommy was an obstacle."
Silence.
"I heard you say one injection would make her go away."
No one moved.
Lily continued.
"I saw the syringe."
The senior nurse slowly turned toward Rachel.
"Is there a syringe?"
Rachel opened her mouth.
Michael spoke first.
"Yes."
Everyone looked at him.
"I saw it too."
Rachel stared at him in disbelief.
"You..."
Michael lowered his head.
"I should have reported this the moment I realized what she intended."
The senior nurse's expression changed instantly.
"No one leaves this room."
She pressed the emergency code on her radio.
"I need hospital security in Maternity Room 512 immediately."
Rachel's breathing became shallow.
She looked toward the open doorway.
Then toward the hallway.
Then toward the window.
Every exit was blocked.
For the first time since Deborah had met her...
Rachel looked afraid.
Very afraid.
But instead of surrendering—
She smiled again.
"I think," she said quietly, "you're all making a terrible mistake."
As security officers appeared in the doorway, Rachel slowly raised both hands.
Then she looked directly at Deborah.
"This isn't over."
Deborah felt a chill run through her body.
Because Rachel said it with absolute certainty.
And deep inside, Deborah realized something else still didn't make sense.
How had Rachel known every detail of her medications...
Her room changes...
Her doctor's schedule...
Someone inside the hospital had been helping her.
May you like
And whoever that person was...
Had not been caught.
