CHAPTER 4 — The First Ally

CHAPTER 4 — The First Ally

Olivia didn't stop running until the lights of the resort disappeared behind the trees.

Her ankle throbbed with every step. The bottom of her wedding dress was caked with mud, and tiny cuts covered her arms from climbing down the trellis. She reached the highway just as a pickup truck slowed beside her.

The elderly driver lowered his window.

"Miss... are you okay?"

Olivia looked at the stranger. Every instinct told her not to trust anyone.

But she had no choice.

"I need to get to Nashville," she whispered. "Please."

The man studied her torn dress, the bruises on her hands, and the terror in her eyes.

Without asking another question, he unlocked the passenger door.

"My name's Harold," he said. "Get in."

For the first twenty minutes, Olivia couldn't speak.

She simply stared out the window, replaying every word she'd heard beneath that bed.

Sleeping pills.

Insurance.

Mountain overlook.

Disappear.

Each memory felt more unbelievable than the last.

Harold finally broke the silence.

"Someone hurt you?"

She hesitated.

"My husband."

Harold's grip tightened on the steering wheel.

"I've got a daughter your age," he said quietly. "Whatever happened... don't go back."

Olivia nodded, tears filling her eyes.

"I won't."

Instead of asking Harold to take her to her apartment, Olivia chose a small motel on the outskirts of Nashville.

If Ethan knew her, he would search the obvious places first.

Her apartment.

Her office.

Her parents' house.

She couldn't risk any of them.

After Harold left, she locked the motel room door, pushed a chair beneath the handle, and finally allowed herself to breathe.

Then she opened her phone.

The copied documents were still there.

She created three encrypted backups.

One in cloud storage.

One on a hidden flash drive she carried in her purse.

One emailed to her college account.

"If anything happens to me," she whispered, "someone will find these."

As she reviewed the files more carefully, something caught her attention.

Several signatures looked genuine.

Others...

weren't hers at all.

Someone had forged them.

She zoomed in.

The handwriting was nearly identical.

Nearly.

Then she noticed another name on multiple documents.

Attorney: Charles Whitmore.

Olivia frowned.

She had never met any attorney named Charles Whitmore.

Whoever this man was...

he had notarized transactions she had never attended.

She searched the internet.

Charles Whitmore.

Nothing.

No law office.

No state bar listing.

No business address.

A ghost.

The name was fake.

Which meant someone inside the conspiracy had been creating fraudulent legal records for years.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown Number.

She ignored it.

Seconds later...

Another call.

Another.

Another.

Then came a text.

OLIVIA. ANSWER YOUR PHONE.

Ethan.

Another message appeared.

Where are you?

Then another.

You're overreacting. Let me explain.

She laughed bitterly.

Explain attempted murder?

Explain forging documents?

Explain kissing Madison five minutes after their wedding?

The phone rang again.

This time she answered.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally Ethan sighed.

"Baby..."

"Don't call me that."

"You misunderstood everything."

"I heard enough."

"It wasn't what it sounded like."

Olivia almost laughed.

"I heard you planning my death."

Long silence.

Then...

His voice changed.

Completely.

The warmth disappeared.

"I was hoping you'd stay emotional."

"What?"

"Because emotional people make mistakes."

A chill crawled down her spine.

"You took documents that don't belong to you."

"I copied evidence."

"They're worthless without context."

"They're enough."

Another silence.

Then Ethan calmly said,

"You have until sunrise."

"To do what?"

"Come back."

"And if I don't?"

"You'll find out why nobody betrays my family."

The line went dead.

Olivia stared at the phone.

"My family."

Not my wife.

Not us.

My family.

Whatever this conspiracy was...

it had existed long before she entered Ethan's life.

May you like

And somehow...

she had married directly into it.
