CHAPTER 3 — The Escape

CHAPTER 3 — The Escape
Olivia knew one thing.
If she stayed beneath that bed much longer...
she would die.
She forced herself to think.
The suite had two exits.
The front door.
And the balcony overlooking the private garden.
Unfortunately, both were visible from where Ethan stood.
She needed another opportunity.
As if fate had heard her prayer, Ethan's phone buzzed.
He frowned.
"The hotel manager."
He answered immediately.
"What?"
A pause.
His expression darkened.
"The florist delivered the wrong arrangements to the ballroom?"
Madison rolled her eyes.
"They're calling now?"
"They need me downstairs."
The voice on speaker interrupted.
"Go."
"I'll stay with Madison. Finish the paperwork later."
Ethan sighed.
"Ten minutes."
He kissed Madison.
Olivia squeezed her eyes shut.
She could hear everything.
The kiss.
The laughter.
The footsteps moving toward the door.
Finally—
The suite door opened.
Closed.
Silence.
Madison remained alone inside.
Olivia didn't move.
Not yet.
Madison walked across the room.
The bathroom door opened.
Running water echoed through the suite.
Olivia counted silently.
One...
Two...
Three...
At twenty seconds, she slowly slid herself from beneath the bed.
Every muscle screamed from remaining motionless so long.
She crouched low.
The bathroom shower had started.
Madison was humming.
Olivia spotted her purse lying on the chair.
Beside it—
Ethan's unlocked tablet.
Without thinking, she grabbed both.
The tablet screen was still open.
An email glowed brightly.
Subject: Final Transfer Instructions
Attached were scanned copies of dozens of legal documents.
Her signature appeared on nearly every page.
But something was wrong.
The numbers had changed.
Loan amounts she had never approved.
Property transfers she had never authorized.
A forged power of attorney.
And one document titled:
Beneficiary Update Upon Spouse's Death.
Beneficiary:
Ethan Parker.
Amount:
$8,500,000.
Olivia's knees nearly buckled.
There it was.
Proof.
Not suspicion.
Evidence.
She quickly used her phone to photograph every page.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Then she forwarded every document from Ethan's tablet to an email account he didn't know she still used from college.
The upload completed just as she heard the shower turn off.
Panic surged.
There was no time.
She slipped the tablet back exactly where she'd found it.
Grabbed only her phone.
Removed her wedding ring.
Placed it carefully on the bedside table.
One final message.
No note.
No explanation.
Just the ring.
Then she quietly unlocked the balcony door.
Warm Tennessee night air rushed against her face.
The balcony overlooked a decorative stone terrace one floor below.
Too high to jump safely.
But a thick ivy-covered trellis climbed the wall beside it.
She didn't hesitate.
Still wearing her wedding dress, Olivia swung one leg over the railing.
Her satin skirt snagged on the metal.
The fabric ripped with a loud tear.
Inside the bathroom, Madison gasped.
"Olivia?"
Olivia let go.
She slid down the trellis, scraping her hands and arms against rough wood and vines before dropping the final six feet onto the grass below.
Pain shot through her ankle.
She bit her lip to keep from crying out.
Above her, the balcony door slammed open.
"There she is!" Madison screamed.
Olivia ran.
Barefoot.
Wedding dress torn.
Hair falling apart.
She sprinted across the moonlit gardens as alarms echoed behind her.
Somewhere inside the hotel, Ethan shouted her name.
Not with love.
With panic.
Because the woman they thought was sleeping...
had escaped with every secret they had worked years to hide.
And before sunrise, Olivia made herself a promise.
She would never again be anyone's victim.
The next time Ethan Parker saw his wife...
May you like
she wouldn't be running.
She would be coming back with enough evidence to destroy every person involved in the conspiracy.
