Chapter 6: The Post

Chapter 6: The Post

I first saw it when my phone started vibrating nonstop.

Text messages.

Notifications.

Missed calls.

At least twenty of them.

Confused, I opened social media.

My stomach dropped.

Ashley had posted a long story.

A very long story.

According to her version of events:

She was the victim.

Ethan was being manipulated.

Mom had publicly humiliated her.

And I was somehow the mastermind behind everything.

Thousands of people had already seen it.

Worse.

Many believed it.

Ashley carefully left out key details.

The edited screenshots.

The debts.

The memorial fund.

The financial support.

Everything.

Instead, she painted herself as a successful woman attacked by jealous relatives.

The comments were brutal.

Some strangers called Mom toxic.

Others called me bitter.

Attention-seeking.

Pathetic.

I felt physically sick reading them.

Then another notification appeared.

Ashley had uploaded a video.

A recording from the birthday dinner.

My heart sank.

She had secretly recorded part of the confrontation.

But only the section where Mom told her to stop talking.

Not the reason why.

Not the truth that followed.

Just enough to make Mom look cruel.

I immediately called Ethan.

“Have you seen it?”

His answer came quietly.

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Fix it.”

For the first time in years, he sounded certain.

That evening, Ethan posted his own statement.

No excuses.

No blaming Ashley.

No hiding.

He admitted everything.

The debts.

The memorial fund.

The financial help.

His failures.

His mistakes.

All of it.

The response was immediate.

People began asking questions.

Difficult questions.

Questions Ashley couldn't answer.

Then came the final blow.

Ethan uploaded the account records.

The payment history.

The transactions.

The evidence.

Not private details.

Just enough to verify the truth.

Within twenty-four hours, public opinion flipped completely.

The comments under Ashley's post changed.

Sympathy disappeared.

Suspicion took its place.

Then outrage.

By the third day, Ashley deleted everything.

Every post.

Every story.

Every video.

Gone.

But the damage remained.

And so did the consequences.

A week later, Ethan called Mom.

“I've started paying the money back.”

Mom didn't respond immediately.

“How?”

“I sold the car.”

The luxury SUV Ashley loved.

Gone.

“I moved into a smaller apartment.”

Another sacrifice.

“And?”

He took a deep breath.

“Ashley filed for divorce.”

The words landed softly.

But nobody sounded surprised.

Because deep down...

the marriage had been falling apart long before the birthday dinner.

The dinner simply exposed what was already broken.

After the call ended, Mom sat quietly for a long time.

Then she looked at me.

“You know something funny?”

“What?”

She smiled.

“Your father always said the truth is patient.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“What does that mean?”

She glanced toward the backyard.

Toward the table where everything had exploded.

“It means lies have to work every day to survive.”

She paused.

“But the truth only needs one moment.”

And finally...

May you like

after years of tension, secrets, and resentment...

that moment had arrived.
