Chapter 5: The Morning After

Chapter 5: The Morning After

Nobody slept much that night.

After the guests left, Mom sat alone on the back patio staring at the empty chairs.

The birthday candles had burned down to melted wax.

Half the food remained untouched.

Including the pasta salad.

I quietly started cleaning dishes.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Mom finally broke the silence.

“Your father would have hated this.”

I stopped drying a plate.

“Yeah.”

She sighed.

“He spent his entire life trying to keep this family together.”

The sadness in her voice hurt more than the argument itself.

Because she wasn't angry anymore.

She was exhausted.

The kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying other people's secrets for too long.

A few minutes later, Ethan returned.

Alone.

His eyes were red and swollen.

Mom looked at him.

“Where's Ashley?”

He sat down heavily.

“She left.”

Nobody responded.

“She packed a suitcase.”

Mom's face tightened.

“And?”

“She said she's staying with a friend.”

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Finally, Ethan looked at me.

For the first time in years, there was no arrogance.

No superiority.

No older-brother attitude.

Just shame.

“I owe you an apology.”

I stared at him.

“I know.”

A sad laugh escaped him.

“Fair.”

He rubbed his face.

“I should've defended you yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“I should've defended you years ago.”

That one hit harder.

Because it was true.

Ashley hadn't become comfortable humiliating me overnight.

It had happened because Ethan allowed it.

Again and again.

Birthday dinners.

Family holidays.

Casual gatherings.

Little comments.

Tiny insults.

Each one ignored.

Each one excused.

Until they became normal.

Mom folded her hands.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

Ethan looked up.

“You never stole money from me.”

His face fell.

“You stole trust.”

Tears immediately filled his eyes again.

And for once, nobody tried to comfort him.

Because there was nothing to say.

Trust wasn't something you could repay with a check.

It took years to build.

Seconds to destroy.

Then Mom stood.

She walked into the kitchen.

When she returned, she was carrying the bowl of pasta salad.

She placed it in front of Ethan.

“Eat.”

He blinked.

“What?”

“Eat.”

Confused, he took a bite.

Mom smiled faintly.

“Still my favorite.”

For the first time since the disaster began, I laughed.

A real laugh.

And surprisingly...

Mom laughed too.

The tension broke.

Just a little.

But enough for us to breathe again.

We thought the worst was over.

We were wrong.

Because later that afternoon, Ashley posted something online.

And within hours...

the entire situation became public.
