Chapter 4: The Account Nobody Knew About

Chapter 4: The Account Nobody Knew About

Mom removed a single document.

One sheet of paper.

But judging by her expression, it mattered more than everything else combined.

Ethan looked uneasy.

Ashley looked terrified.

Mom placed the document in the center of the table.

“What is that?” my uncle asked.

Mom looked directly at Ethan.

“Tell them.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I can't.”

Mom nodded.

“Then I will.”

She took a breath.

“Six months ago, I discovered money disappearing from your father's memorial fund.”

The table exploded.

“What?”

“Impossible.”

“Who would do that?”

The memorial fund had been created after Dad's death.

Friends, family, and former coworkers contributed money to support a scholarship in his name.

Everyone cared about it.

Mom pointed at the paper.

“This is the account history.”

Ashley stood abruptly.

“We're leaving.”

“No,” Mom said.

“Sit down.”

For the first time, Ashley actually listened.

Mom turned to the final page.

“Over twenty thousand dollars disappeared.”

A stunned silence followed.

Then she looked directly at Ethan.

Tears filled his eyes.

And suddenly I knew.

“Oh my God.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“I was going to put it back.”

The words barely came out.

The entire family stared.

Ashley jumped in immediately.

“He borrowed it.”

“Borrowed?” Aunt Karen snapped.

“Without permission?”

Ethan looked devastated.

“My business was collapsing. I panicked.”

Mom’s eyes filled with tears.

“You stole from your father's legacy.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I thought I could fix everything before anyone noticed.”

Ashley grabbed his arm.

“Tell them the whole story.”

Ethan looked miserable.

But then something unexpected happened.

He pulled his arm away.

“No.”

Ashley froze.

“What?”

“No.”

The single word changed everything.

For the first time all evening, Ethan looked directly at her.

“I've spent three years covering for you.”

The table went silent.

Ashley looked stunned.

“What are you doing?”

“Being honest.”

His voice shook.

“But finally being honest.”

Everyone listened.

Every word.

“Half those designer purchases weren't mine.”

Ashley’s face turned white.

“The vacations weren't mine.”

“Ashley—”

“The debt wasn't mine.”

Now nobody could look away.

Ethan stood up.

Years of frustration pouring out at once.

“You kept pushing for more.”

“A bigger house.”

“More trips.”

“More jewelry.”

“More status.”

Ashley looked horrified.

“Stop talking.”

But Ethan didn't stop.

Not anymore.

“I drained savings.”

“I took loans.”

“I borrowed from Mom.”

“And eventually…”

His voice cracked.

“I took money from Dad's memorial account.”

Mom began crying softly.

Not out of anger.

Out of heartbreak.

Because she finally understood what had happened.

Ashley wasn't the only person responsible.

But she had helped create the disaster.

The image of the perfect, successful couple shattered right there in front of everyone.

Years of lies collapsing in minutes.

Ashley looked around desperately.

Nobody was on her side.

Nobody.

Then she grabbed her purse.

“You're all unbelievable.”

And with that, she stormed out of the backyard.

The gate slammed behind her.

Silence followed.

A long silence.

Ethan sat back down.

Broken.

Defeated.

Ashamed.

Mom looked at him for a long time.

Then she quietly said:

“You're still my son.”

Ethan burst into tears.

And for the first time all night, nobody said a word.

Because everyone knew the truth now.

The dinner had started with a bowl of pasta salad.

But it ended with an entire family's secrets finally laid bare.
