CHAPTER 7 – The Truth They Buried

CHAPTER 7 – The Truth They Buried

The courtroom fell into stunned silence.

My father, Ernest Bennett, who had spent his entire life lecturing everyone about honor and responsibility, suddenly looked like a man who had forgotten how to breathe.

The judge held up the envelope.

"This information was submitted this morning by the District Attorney's Office. It concerns an ongoing financial investigation involving the Bennett Family Trust."

My mother immediately stood.

"Your Honor, this has nothing to do with today's hearing."

The judge looked at her over the rim of his glasses.

"Perhaps. Or perhaps it has everything to do with it."

He opened the file.

"The documents suggest that nearly eighteen years ago, funds established by Sofia Bennett's late grandmother for both granddaughters were transferred into accounts controlled by Ernest Bennett."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

I whispered before I could stop myself.

My grandmother...

The only person in my family who had ever made me feel loved.

She had died when I was eleven.

I had been told she left nothing behind.

Now I was hearing that she had left something for me all along.

The judge continued.

"According to these records, half of the trust was intended for Sofia Bennett's education and future financial security."

I looked at my father.

"You told me Grandma died with nothing."

He refused to meet my eyes.

Instead, Claudia stepped forward.

"There has to be some mistake."

Detective Brooks quietly handed another folder to the judge.

"There isn't."

The folder contained bank records, trust documents, and signatures verified by forensic analysts.

The money had disappeared.

It hadn't vanished.

It had been redirected.

Over the years, it paid for Claudia's private school.

Her college tuition.

Her luxury car.

Even the down payment on the large house she now proudly called her own.

Everything I had struggled without...

Had been built using the future my grandmother had intended for me.

Tears filled my eyes.

Not because of the money.

Because for eighteen years, I had believed I simply wasn't worth investing in.

The truth was even worse.

They had stolen my future before I was old enough to understand what had been taken.

The judge closed the file.

"I believe this court now has a much clearer picture of the family's credibility."

Richard Holloway quietly lowered his head.

"My client failed to disclose these matters."

The judge looked directly at him.

"And that omission is deeply troubling."

Then he turned toward me.

"Mrs. Bennett, based on the evidence presented today, I find absolutely no basis for granting emergency custody."

My knees nearly gave way.

"The petition is dismissed."

He wasn't finished.

"I am also issuing a temporary protective order prohibiting Teresa Bennett, Ernest Bennett, and Claudia Bennett from contacting either Sofia Bennett or Valentina Bennett pending further proceedings."

My mother gasped.

"You can't keep us away from our granddaughter!"

The judge answered firmly.

"A grandmother who publicly humiliates a child and participates in a scheme to remove her from a loving parent has forfeited the privilege of this court's sympathy."

The gavel struck.

May you like

For the first time in years...

Someone had finally chosen my daughter over my parents.
