CHAPTER 3 – The Woman Who Believed Me

CHAPTER 3 – The Woman Who Believed Me
I barely slept that night.
Every creak in the apartment sounded like footsteps outside my door. Every passing car made me glance through the blinds. The anonymous photo of Valentina stayed burned into my mind.
By sunrise, I had already made two decisions.
First, Valentina would not go to school.
Second, I would never face my parents alone again.
As Valentina ate cereal in silence, I called the detective whose name appeared on the police report.
"Detective Hannah Brooks."
Her calm voice steadied me.
"My name is Sofia Bennett. I filed the fraud report last night... and someone sent me a threatening photo of my daughter."
There was a long pause.
"Don't delete anything," she said immediately. "I'm coming to you."
An hour later, Detective Brooks sat at my uneven kitchen table, studying my phone.
She wasn't what I expected.
No dramatic speeches.
No rushed conclusions.
She quietly examined every screenshot, every bank transaction, every voicemail, and every second of the video I had recorded outside my apartment.
When she finished, she looked directly at me.
"Mrs. Bennett, have your parents ever had access to your bank account?"
"Years ago."
"Did you remove them?"
"I thought I did."
She nodded slowly.
"Someone with prior authorization may have exploited old account permissions."
"So... they really stole it?"
"It certainly appears that way."
For the first time since yesterday, I felt someone believed me.
Detective Brooks wasn't finished.
"I also want to ask about something else."
"The threat?"
She nodded.
"Your father didn't say he came for the money."
"No."
"He specifically said he came for Valentina."
"Yes."
She wrote something in her notebook.
"That concerns me."
My stomach tightened.
"You think they could actually try to take her?"
"I think people who feel entitled to control others sometimes escalate when they lose that control."
Those words stayed with me.
Escalate.
That afternoon I visited the bank.
The branch manager personally escorted me into a private office.
"We've reviewed the transfer."
He looked uncomfortable.
"It was authorized using security credentials connected to an older family account."
"My mother shouldn't have had access."
"She shouldn't."
He slid several printed pages across the desk.
"But someone updated beneficiary permissions six months ago."
I stared at the signature.
My name.
Except...
It wasn't mine.
Someone had forged it.
The manager immediately froze every linked account and helped me open completely new banking records.
"Detective Brooks requested we preserve all evidence."
I signed every document with shaking hands.
Before leaving, he quietly said,
"I'm very sorry this happened to you."
Simple words.
But after years of being blamed for everything...
They nearly made me cry.
That evening, Detective Brooks called.
"We found something."
"What?"
"The grocery store security cameras."
"They recorded everything."
My chest tightened.
"The doll?"
"Everything."
"Your mother taking it."
"Your father confronting you."
"The child crying."
"And..."
She paused.
"We also found something you haven't seen."
"What?"
"Your sister didn't leave immediately."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"After you walked out, Claudia remained inside the store."
"And?"
"She spoke with someone."
"Who?"
"We're identifying him now."
Cold fear spread through my body.
My sister hadn't simply enjoyed humiliating us.
She had stayed behind for another reason.
That night, Valentina climbed into my lap while I folded laundry.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"If Grandma says sorry... do I have to hug her?"
I stopped folding.
"No."
"What if Grandpa cries?"
"You still don't have to."
She looked relieved.
"I don't like when they look at me."
Neither did I.
I kissed the top of her head.
"From now on, nobody gets to touch you unless you want them to."
She smiled for the first time in two days.
A tiny smile.
But it gave me hope.
The next morning, my phone rang again.
It was Detective Brooks.
"We identified the man from the grocery store."
"Who is he?"
"Family attorney Richard Holloway."
My blood froze.
"My parents' lawyer?"
"Yes."
"And Sofia..."
Her voice became serious.
"He wasn't discussing the fraud investigation."
"What was he discussing?"
There was another pause.
Then came the sentence that turned my entire world upside down.
"He was carrying paperwork titled 'Emergency Petition for Temporary Custody of Minor Child.'"
My knees nearly gave out.
May you like
They hadn't threatened to take Valentina.
They had already started trying.
