CHAPTER 4 – Their Perfect Lie

CHAPTER 4 – Their Perfect Lie
I drove straight to the courthouse.
Detective Brooks had advised me not to panic, but panic was impossible to avoid.
Someone wanted my daughter.
Someone with money.
Lawyers.
Connections.
People who had spent my entire life convincing others they were respectable.
Inside the courthouse, a clerk searched the records.
Then she looked up.
"There is a filing."
My heart stopped.
"It hasn't been approved yet."
I exhaled.
"But it was submitted yesterday afternoon."
Yesterday.
Before they even came to my apartment.
Before they demanded I open the door.
Everything had been planned.
The petition described me as:
Emotionally unstable.
Financially irresponsible.
Unable to provide a safe environment.
Possibly neglectful.
Every sentence was a lie.
But every lie had been carefully written to sound believable.
I felt sick.
Detective Brooks arrived twenty minutes later.
She read the documents without speaking.
Finally she looked at me.
"This wasn't written overnight."
"What do you mean?"
"They've been preparing this for weeks."
Weeks.
While smiling at family dinners.
While pretending nothing was wrong.
While planning to erase me from my daughter's life.
Then another name appeared on the paperwork.
The proposed guardian.
Not Teresa.
Not Ernest.
Not Claudia.
A wealthy businessman named Michael Dawson.
I stared at the page.
"Who is that?"
Detective Brooks frowned.
"I don't know."
"But your parents apparently believe he's suitable to help raise Valentina."
None of it made sense.
Why would a stranger appear in a custody petition?
Who was he?
And why did his name matter?
Later that afternoon, Detective Brooks called with another discovery.
"We traced the anonymous text."
"You found them?"
"The phone was prepaid."
My hope faded.
"But..."
She continued.
"It was activated near your parents' neighborhood."
My pulse quickened.
"So it was them."
"We can't prove who physically sent it."
"Yet."
That evening there was another knock on my apartment door.
I froze.
Looking through the peephole, I saw someone I had never met.
A man in an expensive navy suit.
Around fifty years old.
Gray hair.
Calm expression.
He stood alone.
When I didn't answer, he spoke quietly.
"My name is Michael Dawson."
The name hit me like lightning.
The same name from the custody papers.
"I don't want your daughter," he said through the closed door.
"I came because someone is lying to both of us."
I stood completely still.
May you like
Then he added one sentence that changed everything.
"I think your parents are using my name without telling me the truth."
