CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Betrayal

CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Betrayal
Bennett's final words echoed in my head long after the call ended.
"You've been looking at the wrong enemy this entire time."
For the first time since this nightmare began, uncertainty crept back into my mind.
Was he manipulating me?
Or had I truly missed something?
The next morning, Naomi and I reviewed every document again.
Every bank transfer.
Every email.
Every recording.
Every timeline.
Nothing suggested anyone beyond Bennett, Heather, and Victor.
Yet something bothered Naomi.
"He's arrogant," she said, tapping her pen against the desk.
"People like Bennett don't suddenly admit defeat unless they're trying to gain something."
"You think he's lying?"
"I think he's hiding the last piece."
Before she could continue, her assistant rushed into the office.
"Naomi... Victor Lang is here."
"What?"
"He wants to make a deal."
Victor no longer looked like the polished financial adviser everyone admired.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
Dark circles hung beneath his eyes.
He sat across from us without speaking.
Finally, he slid a thick envelope across the table.
"I'll cooperate."
Naomi didn't touch it.
"Why?"
"Because Bennett betrayed me."
I almost laughed.
"The man who helped betray his own wife is upset about betrayal?"
Victor lowered his head.
"I deserve that."
He looked at me.
"But you deserve the truth."
Naomi opened the envelope.
Inside were contracts, handwritten notes, account numbers, and one document unlike the others.
It was a partnership agreement.
Signed eighteen months earlier.
One signature belonged to Bennett.
The other belonged to Victor.
At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.
'Once the divorce is finalized, profits will be divided equally.'
Naomi looked up.
"So Bennett wasn't following your plan."
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"It was his."
The room became silent.
"I simply helped him hide the money."
"Why?"
Victor closed his eyes.
"Greed."
He confessed everything.
Bennett had approached him nearly two years earlier.
He wanted a way to leave the marriage with as much money as possible.
Victor suggested moving small amounts into hidden accounts.
Bennett expanded the idea.
He created fake business expenses.
Invented investment losses.
Opened shell accounts.
Even manipulated tax documents.
Heather had known about the affair...
But she hadn't known the full financial scheme until much later.
When she finally understood, she was already trapped.
"You mean she wasn't the mastermind?"
"No."
Victor looked directly at me.
"Everything started with Bennett."
That afternoon, federal financial investigators arrived.
Victor officially surrendered every password, every account number, and every encrypted backup.
Within hours they recovered nearly all the hidden money.
More than $1.8 million.
Money Bennett believed no one would ever find.
Naomi smiled for the first time in weeks.
"He didn't just lose the divorce."
"He may have committed financial fraud."
Three weeks later, the courtroom was packed.
Family.
Friends.
Financial investigators.
Reporters.
Even people Bennett had worked with for years.
Everyone wanted to see the man who believed he could outsmart everyone.
Bennett entered wearing an expensive gray suit.
But the confidence was gone.
His attorney looked exhausted.
Heather testified first.
She admitted the affair.
She admitted lying.
Then she admitted Bennett's plan to take marital assets before filing for divorce.
She answered every question honestly.
The courtroom remained silent.
Then Victor testified.
His confession lasted nearly three hours.
By the time he finished...
No one doubted who had designed the scheme.
Finally...
It was Bennett's turn.
He walked to the witness stand without looking at me.
His attorney asked simple questions.
He denied everything.
Blamed Victor.
Blamed Heather.
Blamed misunderstandings.
Then Naomi stood.
She approached slowly.
"Mr. Blackwood..."
"Yes?"
"Did you write this?"
She held up the document titled Operation New Beginning.
He hesitated.
"No."
She displayed forensic handwriting analysis.
"It matches your handwriting."
Silence.
Then she played the recording.
His own voice filled the courtroom.
"She'll never leave me. She likes stability too much."
Another recording.
"Once I've saved enough in the other account, I'll walk away clean."
Then the final one.
"If she'll betray one woman... she'll betray me too."
Every lie collapsed.
One recording after another.
One document after another.
One witness after another.

By the time Naomi finished...
Even Bennett's attorney looked defeated.
