CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent

Naomi spent the next forty-eight hours building our case.

Every document was cataloged.

Every transfer traced.

Every email authenticated.

Every lie connected.

Then she received one final surprise.

Heather had requested a meeting.

"I don't trust this," I said.

"You shouldn't," Naomi replied.

"But we're still going."

We met Heather in a quiet hotel conference room.

She arrived alone.

No makeup.

No designer clothes.

She looked nothing like the confident woman from the surveillance footage.

She looked terrified.

She placed a recording device on the table.

"I don't want this anymore."

Naomi folded her arms.

"Then start talking."

Heather looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

The apology meant nothing.

"I know."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I thought Bennett was leaving you because the marriage was already over."

"You believed that?"

"He told me you were emotionally abusive."

I almost laughed.

"He said you controlled every dollar."

I stared at her.

"He said you refused to work."

Naomi quietly slid copies of my tax returns across the table.

Heather's face turned white.

"You..."

"You paid more household expenses than he did," she whispered.

"Yes."

She buried her face in her hands.

"Oh my God."

For nearly two hours Heather talked.

She described secret meetings.

Fake business trips.

Offshore accounts.

Victor's role.

Even conversations Bennett thought no one would ever hear.

Then she removed a flash drive from her purse.

"I recorded him."

Naomi looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because..."

Heather swallowed hard.

"I stopped trusting him."

The recording began playing.

Bennett's voice filled the room.

"Once the divorce is finished..."

Heather laughed.

"We'll finally be together."

There was a pause.

Then Bennett answered.

"Maybe."

"What do you mean maybe?"

"I've learned something."

"What?"

"Never trust someone willing to help cheat."

Silence.

Then Bennett laughed.

"If she'll betray one woman..."

"...she'll betray me too."

Heather closed her eyes.

"He was planning to leave me too."

Naomi stopped the recording.

A slow smile appeared on her face.

"He just destroyed his own credibility."

Heather looked confused.

"What happens now?"

"You become a witness."

She nodded immediately.

"I will testify."

Three weeks later, discovery officially began.

Bennett's attorney walked confidently into the conference room.

He smiled politely.

"My client is prepared to negotiate."

Naomi slid one document across the table.

Then another.

Then another.

The attorney's smile faded.

"What is all this?"

"Evidence."

He flipped through the pages.

His face slowly lost all color.

Forgery reports.

Financial tracing.

Recorded conversations.

Operation New Beginning.

Heather's sworn statement.

Surveillance logs.

Offshore transfers.

Secret accounts.

The room became painfully quiet.

Finally, Bennett's attorney looked up.

"You have... all of this?"

Naomi smiled.

"Oh..."

"We have much more."

That evening, Bennett called me for the first time since the accounts had been frozen.

His voice sounded nothing like before.

No arrogance.

No confidence.

Only panic.

"Claire..."

"What?"

"We need to talk."

"I don't think we do."

"Please."

I remained silent.

Then he whispered the one sentence I never imagined I would hear.

"I made a mistake."

I closed my eyes.

Months earlier, those words would have broken me.

Now...

They meant absolutely nothing.

Just as I was about to hang up, Bennett spoke again.

"There are things you still don't know."

I frowned.

"What things?"

His breathing became uneven.

"You think Victor was the mastermind..."

A long silence followed.

Then he said the words that made my heart stop.

May you like

"You've been looking at the wrong enemy this entire time."

The line went dead.
