CHAPTER 4 — The Recording No One Was Supposed to Hear
The next morning I met Naomi before sunrise.
She handed me a flash drive.
"Watch this."
The conference room lights dimmed.
Security footage appeared on the screen.
A private room inside an upscale country club.
Bennett entered first.
Five minutes later...
Victor Lang arrived carrying a leather briefcase.
They shook hands.
Then someone else walked into the room.
Heather.
She looked far more confident than I had ever seen her.
No nervousness.
No secrecy.
She sat beside Bennett as though she already belonged there.
The video had no audio.
But Naomi wasn't finished.
She connected another file.
"This came from a legally obtained recording."
The voices filled the room.
Victor spoke first.
"The transfer is complete."
Bennett smiled.
"No way Claire figures it out."
Heather laughed.
"She still thinks you're working late."
All three laughed together.
Then Victor opened his briefcase.
"There is one problem."
Bennett frowned.
"What?"
"The wife met with a divorce attorney."
Silence filled the room.
Heather looked nervous.
"How do you know?"
Victor answered calmly.
"I have contacts."
Bennett leaned back.
"So what?"
Victor lowered his voice.
"If she starts tracing the money..."
He didn't finish.
Instead, he slid another folder across the table.
Bennett opened it.
"What is this?"
"A backup plan."
Heather looked confused.
Victor smiled.
"If things go badly..."
"...we make it look like Claire emptied the accounts herself."
Every muscle in my body froze.
Naomi paused the recording.
"Did you hear that?"
I nodded slowly.
"They're framing me."
"They intended to."
My hands began shaking.
Naomi reached across the table.
"Not anymore."
Before noon, she filed emergency motions with the court.
Requests to freeze every known account.
Orders preventing Bennett from transferring additional assets.
Applications for digital preservation of every financial record.
By evening, the judge had approved them.
For the first time in months...
Bennett no longer controlled the money.
He just didn't know it yet.
That night he came home unusually cheerful.
"You'll never guess what happened."
"What?"
"My company might promote me."
"Congratulations."
He smiled proudly.
"We should celebrate this weekend."
I looked into his eyes.
"I have plans."
He laughed.
"Cancel them."
"I don't think I will."
For the first time...
His smile disappeared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means," I said calmly, "not everything revolves around your schedule."
He stared at me for several long seconds.
Then he forced another smile.
"You've changed."
"Yes."
"I liked the old Claire better."
"I know."
Because the old Claire would never have seen what was coming.
The following morning, Naomi called before eight.
Her voice was sharper than usual.
"Claire..."
"What happened?"
"The judge signed the asset-freeze order."
"That's good, isn't it?"
"It is."
"But..."
She hesitated.
"Bennett just tried to withdraw two hundred thousand dollars."
My heart pounded.
"Was he successful?"
"No."
"What happened?"
Naomi smiled.
"The bank locked every account."
I closed my eyes.
For the first time...
Bennett had finally lost control.
But twenty minutes later, my phone rang again.
Naomi sounded more serious than ever.
"Claire..."
"He knows."
I stood frozen.
"What do you mean?"
"He just left the bank."
"And?"
"He isn't driving home."
"Where is he going?"
Naomi looked at the GPS report that had just been sent by the investigator.
Then she quietly said,
"He's heading to your parents' house."
May you like
And for the first time since this nightmare had begun...
I was truly afraid.
