CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5

The drive to the state financial crimes office was almost silent.

Rain tapped steadily against the windshield as Detective Chloe Park kept both hands on the steering wheel.

I stared out the passenger window, unable to stop thinking about her last words.

A list of names.

Not clients.

Not vendors.

People.

People who had been paid to stay silent.

The conference room was already full when we arrived.

Forensic accountants.

Digital investigators.

Two FBI agents assigned to financial crimes.

An assistant district attorney.

A projector illuminated a spreadsheet across one wall.

Every row contained the same columns.

Name. Date. Amount. Reason.

My stomach tightened.

"What am I looking at?"

A forensic analyst answered.

"Mr. Sullivan didn't just steal money."

"He documented where it went."

He clicked the remote.

The first name appeared.

Former Safety Inspector — $85,000.

Reason:

"Inspection report withdrawn."

Another click.

Project Manager — $120,000.

"Agreed not to testify."

Another.

Supplier — $47,500.

"Contract dispute resolved."

The analyst looked around the room.

"Those descriptions are intentionally vague."

"But the payment patterns tell a different story."

Then he opened another file.

"This folder was password protected."

"Who cracked it?" Chloe asked.

"Our cyber team."

The screen filled with scanned documents.

Non-disclosure agreements.

Private settlement contracts.

Threat letters.

Photographs.

My breathing slowed.

One photograph caught my attention immediately.

I leaned closer.

"Wait..."

The image showed Dominic shaking hands with a city building inspector.

An envelope changed hands between them.

The date stamp was three years old.

"I remember that project."

Everyone turned toward me.

"The apartment complex on Westbrook Avenue."

The analyst nodded.

"Exactly."

"What happened?"

"It passed inspection."

"It shouldn't have."

I remembered the software reports.

Repeated structural warnings.

Missing steel deliveries.

Concrete tests that suddenly disappeared from the records.

I whispered,

"He bribed the inspector."

One of the FBI agents folded his arms.

"It appears that wasn't an isolated incident."

He displayed a city map.

Red dots spread across multiple construction sites.

"Twelve developments."

"Seven inspectors."

"Multiple shell companies."

"What started as a domestic violence case..."

He looked toward Detective Park.

"...has uncovered what appears to be years of organized financial fraud and public corruption."

The room fell quiet.

Even Chloe seemed surprised by how quickly the case had grown.

Just then, another investigator entered carrying a cardboard evidence box.

"We found this hidden behind a false wall in Dominic's office."

Inside were several old journals.

Leather-bound.

Each labeled by year.

The analyst carefully opened the most recent volume.

Every page contained handwritten notes.

Names.

Meetings.

Payments.

Threats.

Dominic had documented everything.

He believed no one would ever read it.

Then I noticed something.

"Can I see page thirty-two?"

The investigator handed me the journal.

My heart began pounding.

There, squeezed between financial notes, was my name.

Emily.

Beneath it, in Dominic's unmistakable handwriting:

"Still too afraid to leave.

No access to money.

Parents keep pressure on her.

Burned bridge with friends complete.

Control level: stable."

The room became painfully still.

Another entry.

"Installed cameras outside house.

Check phone weekly.

If she resists, increase consequences."

I closed the journal.

My hands shook.

Not from fear.

From the horrifying realization that my life had been reduced to progress reports.

Chloe gently took the journal from me.

"You don't have to read any more."

"I do."

"You've seen enough."

"No."

I looked at her.

"I need to know who I survived."

The final pages revealed something even darker.

A handwritten checklist.

Isolation.

✔ Financial dependence.

✔ Family support removed.

✔ Friends gone.

✔ Employment controlled.

Compliance.

✔ Apologies immediate.

✔ Eye contact reduced.

✔ Questions stopped.

Then one final blank line.

Children.

No checkmark.

No notes.

Just the word.

A chill ran through me.

"We never had children."

Chloe looked at me carefully.

"Did he want them?"

I nodded slowly.

"I always thought he did."

The investigator quietly replied,

"Not necessarily."

He pointed to the checklist.

"This isn't a family plan."

"It's a control plan."

The meaning hit me like ice water.

If I had become pregnant...

Leaving would have been almost impossible.

Before anyone could speak again, an officer hurried into the room.

"We've got a situation."

Chloe stood.

"What happened?"

"Someone tried accessing Dominic's offshore accounts an hour ago."

"From where?"

The officer handed over a printed report.

"Not overseas."

"Here."

"In the city."

"So someone else has the passwords?"

"Apparently."

The room shifted into motion.

Phones rang.

Agents grabbed jackets.

Search warrants were requested.

If someone was emptying those accounts...

Evidence could disappear forever.

As everyone rushed out, Chloe remained beside me.

"I need you somewhere safe."

"I'm not hiding anymore."

"I know."

She gave a small, understanding smile.

"But neither is whoever just logged into those accounts."

Her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

Then frowned.

"It gets worse."

"What now?"

She turned the screen toward me.

A security camera image filled the display.

Someone wearing a dark baseball cap had just entered my hospital room.

The room I had checked out of that morning.

The person searched every drawer.

Lifted the mattress.

Opened every cabinet.

Looking for something.

Looking for...

Me.

The camera captured the stranger's face just long enough for the software to sharpen it.

Chloe's expression hardened.

"I know him."

"You do?"

She nodded once.

"He worked security for Dominic."

I swallowed.

"Is he trying to help him?"

"No."

She stared at the image.

"I think he's trying to find something before we do."

"What?"

Chloe zoomed in on the man's hand.

He was holding a small slip of paper.

May you like

On it was a single word.

LEDGER.
