CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4
Three days after Dominic's arrest, the courthouse overflowed before sunrise.
Reporters crowded the front steps.
Camera crews waited behind barricades.
Former employees stood together in uneasy silence, avoiding the television microphones.
No one expected a routine bail hearing anymore.
It had become something much larger.
Detective Chloe Park met me in a quiet conference room before the hearing.
My burned hand was wrapped in fresh bandages.
"How are you feeling?"
"I finally slept."
She smiled.
"That's progress."
She handed me another file.
"We've identified everyone who contacted us."
I opened it.
Five names had become twelve.
By that morning, twelve current and former employees had given statements.
Some described payroll fraud.
Others claimed Dominic had threatened subcontractors who questioned missing payments.
One admitted he had been ordered to destroy financial records after an IRS inquiry two years earlier.
"What changed?" I asked.
"They saw the video."
"The kitchen footage?"
Chloe nodded.
"They realized if someone like you could finally tell the truth, maybe they could too."
Inside Courtroom Three, Dominic looked nothing like the man who had towered over me in our kitchen.
His expensive tailored suit had been replaced with a wrinkled jail uniform.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
Victoria sat behind the defense table, clutching a designer handbag with both hands.
Arthur stared straight ahead.
Neither looked at me.
Dominic did.
His expression shifted the moment our eyes met.
First anger.
Then disbelief.
Finally...
Fear.
Because I wasn't sitting alone.
I was seated beside Detective Park and the assistant district attorney.
The judge entered.
"Mr. Sullivan, you are before this court regarding charges of aggravated domestic assault, unlawful imprisonment, coercive control, and related offenses."
Dominic's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, my client has no criminal history, owns a successful business, and poses no flight risk."
The prosecutor rose immediately.
"The State strongly objects."
She placed several binders on the evidence table.
"The defendant has demonstrated repeated violence, extensive coercive behavior, and now appears connected to a large-scale financial fraud investigation."
Dominic's attorney frowned.
"The financial allegations are speculative."
The prosecutor looked toward the judge.
"Not anymore."
She nodded toward the courtroom doors.
"Your Honor, with the court's permission, the State calls its first witness."
A man in his early fifties walked into the courtroom.
Dominic's face instantly drained of color.
"No..."
I recognized him immediately.
Michael Reyes.
Dominic's former chief financial officer.
He had abruptly resigned eight months earlier.
Dominic claimed Michael had "retired for health reasons."
That had been another lie.
Michael took the oath.
The prosecutor approached.
"Mr. Reyes, why did you resign?"
"I refused to falsify company financial statements."
The courtroom became silent.
"Who instructed you to falsify them?"
"Dominic Sullivan."
Dominic shot to his feet.
"He's lying!"
The judge slammed the gavel.
"Sit down, Mr. Sullivan."
Michael continued.
"I kept copies."
He pointed toward several sealed boxes sitting beside the prosecution table.
"I turned over everything yesterday."
The prosecutor opened one box.
Inside were ledgers.
Contracts.
Hard drives.
Handwritten notes.
Years of records.
"My team has spent the last eighteen hours reviewing these materials," she said.
"So far, we've identified more than six million dollars in fraudulent transactions."
Gasps spread through the courtroom.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Arthur finally looked at his son.
It was the first time I'd ever seen disappointment replace blind loyalty.
The prosecutor wasn't finished.
"The State calls its second witness."
A woman stepped forward.
I recognized her too.
Sofia Martinez.
She had worked in Dominic's accounting department.
She looked nervous but determined.
"Ms. Martinez, why did you leave the company?"
She swallowed.
"Because Mr. Sullivan threatened to ruin my career if I reported what I found."
"What did you find?"
She looked directly at Dominic.
"He created fake subcontractors."
The prosecutor displayed a chart on the courtroom monitor.
Twenty-three shell companies.
All connected by hidden ownership records.
Payments flowed from Dominic's construction company into those entities...
Then disappeared into offshore accounts.
The courtroom buzzed with whispers.
Dominic looked at his attorney.
The attorney slowly closed his notebook.
He already knew.
This defense was collapsing.
Then the prosecutor did something no one expected.
"Your Honor, the State requests permission to play Exhibit 14."
The judge nodded.
The courtroom lights dimmed.
The kitchen appeared on the large screen.
Every person watched in silence.
Dominic grabbing my wrist.
Forcing my hand onto the glowing burner.
My scream.
Victoria stepping over me to pour another glass of wine.
Her cold voice echoed through the courtroom.
"Maybe now she'll learn her place."
Arthur's television continued playing in the background while I lay on the floor.
When the video ended...
No one spoke.
The silence was heavier than any argument.
The judge removed his glasses.
"I have seen enough."
He looked directly at Dominic.
"Given the severity of the evidence, the risk of witness intimidation, and the ongoing financial investigation..."
He paused.
"Bail is denied."
Dominic's shoulders slumped.
Two deputies moved toward him.
"This court orders the defendant held pending trial."
As they led him away, Dominic twisted around to look at me one last time.
"This isn't over!"
I met his gaze calmly.
"No."
I said quietly enough that only he could hear.
"It's finally beginning."
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Detective Park.
She declined to comment.
Instead, she walked beside me toward her car.
Just before we reached it, her phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then stopped walking.
"What is it?" I asked.
She lowered the phone slowly.
"The forensic accountants just called."
My stomach tightened.
"They finished examining Dominic's company servers."
"And?"
Chloe looked at me with a mixture of surprise and concern.
"They found another encrypted database."
"What was inside?"
She took a slow breath.
"It wasn't just financial records."
My pulse quickened.
"It was a list."
"A list of what?"
Chloe's expression hardened.
"A list of names."
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
"People Dominic had been paying to keep quiet."
