CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3
Dominic's shoulders sagged as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
For the first time since I had met him, there was no arrogance in his expression.
Only panic.
"This is insane!" he shouted as two officers escorted him toward the front door. "Emily, tell them it was an accident!"
I didn't answer.
His voice cracked.
"Emily!"
The woman who had spent eighteen months apologizing for things she hadn't done no longer existed.
Detective Chloe Park nodded to one of the paramedics waiting outside.
"Let's get her hand treated."
As the medic carefully unwrapped the towel from my palm, he inhaled sharply.
"This is a serious burn."
He looked at Chloe.
"She needs the hospital. Now."
Victoria stepped forward, her face flushed with outrage.
"You're not taking her anywhere until she tells the police the truth!"
An officer immediately blocked her path.
"Ma'am, stay back."
Victoria pointed at me with a trembling finger.
"She's destroying this family!"
Detective Park's voice remained calm.
"No, Mrs. Sullivan."
She glanced toward Dominic, who was now standing beside a patrol car.
"Your son did that himself."
The ambulance doors closed behind me.
As the vehicle pulled away, I watched through the rear window.
Dominic was still yelling.
Victoria was crying now—not for me, but for the son she believed could do no wrong.
Arthur stood on the porch with his hands buried in his pockets, staring at the ground.
He hadn't said a single word since seeing the video.
At the emergency room, nurses rushed me into a treatment room.
The doctor examined my hand before looking up with concern.
"The burns are deep."
"Will I lose function?"
"We're going to do everything we can to prevent that."
His careful honesty somehow comforted me more than false reassurance would have.
As they cleaned the wound, every nerve screamed.
But strangely...
The physical pain felt smaller than it had an hour earlier.
Because this pain had witnesses.
This pain wasn't being denied.
Detective Park waited until the doctor finished before entering the room.
She carried a thick evidence folder.
"How are you holding up?"
"I've had worse days."
A faint smile crossed her face.
"I was hoping you'd still have your sense of humor."
She pulled up a chair.
"We've reviewed more of the footage."
My stomach tightened.
"How much?"
"Enough."
She opened the folder.
"There were twenty-seven separate video clips."
I blinked.
"Twenty-seven?"
"You set the camera to activate whenever voices exceeded a certain volume."
I nodded.
"I wanted proof."
"You got it."
She slid several photographs across the table.
Each was a still image from the recordings.
Dominic grabbing my arm.
Dominic throwing a plate across the kitchen.
Dominic blocking the doorway so I couldn't leave.
Victoria laughing while he screamed inches from my face.
Arthur silently watching television while I cried in the background.
My chest tightened.
Seeing it from another perspective felt surreal.
For months, they had convinced me I was exaggerating.
Watching the recordings...
I realized I had actually minimized what was happening.
"There was something else," Chloe said quietly.
She reached into the folder again.
"We executed an emergency search warrant tonight."
"For the house?"
"And Dominic's office."
I frowned.
"My software?"
She nodded.
"One of the detectives noticed something while reviewing your financial records."
My heart skipped.
"What?"
"The construction company."
I stared at her.
"What about it?"
"It isn't making nearly as much money as Dominic claims."
I frowned even deeper.
"That doesn't make sense."
"You designed their accounting system."
"I know every dollar that goes through it."
Chloe leaned forward.
"Exactly."
She placed another document on the bed.
Bank statements.
Wire transfers.
Offshore account numbers.
My breath caught.
"No..."
Millions of dollars.
Hidden.
Moved.
Disguised as subcontractor payments.
Invoices created for companies that didn't exist.
Dominic hadn't just been abusing me.
He had been stealing from his own business.
"You recognize these?"
I slowly nodded.
"He bypassed my software."
"Can you prove it?"
I looked closer.
Then I saw it.
One tiny coding signature.
A modification.
Not mine.
Someone had manually altered the database after business hours.
I looked back at Chloe.
"Yes."
"How?"
"He hired someone to rewrite part of my security code."
"You can demonstrate that?"
"I wrote every line of the original program."
I pointed to the document.
"This encryption key doesn't belong."
"You can testify?"
"I can prove exactly when it was changed."
Chloe exchanged a glance with another detective standing outside the room.
"That's what we were hoping."
The next morning, news of Dominic's arrest spread faster than anyone expected.
Local television stations reported a respected contractor had been arrested on charges of domestic violence.
By noon...
The story changed.
"Police Investigating Possible Financial Crimes Connected to Local Construction Firm."
Employees began calling one another.
Suppliers demanded answers.
Clients paused ongoing projects.
Banks started reviewing outstanding loans.
Within hours...
The company Dominic had spent years bragging about was beginning to collapse.
And no one knew the woman they had dismissed as "just the wife" possessed the only complete understanding of how the business actually worked.
Late that afternoon, Chloe returned.
"This just became much bigger."
I looked up.
"What happened?"
She handed me her phone.
A headline filled the screen.
FORMER EMPLOYEE CONTACTS POLICE AFTER SEEING DOMESTIC ABUSE ARREST. CLAIMS YEARS OF FRAUD AND INTIMIDATION.
I slowly lowered the phone.
"Someone came forward?"
Chloe nodded.
"Not one person."
She smiled slightly.
"Five."
I closed my eyes.
For months, I had believed I was alone.
Now the silence surrounding Dominic was beginning to crack.
One witness.
Then five.
And Detective Park had a feeling it wouldn't stop there.
Because once one victim finds the courage to speak...
