CHAPTER 6 — The Man Behind the Closed Door

CHAPTER 6 — The Man Behind the Closed Door
The judge postponed her ruling until the following morning.
Grant was ordered not to contact Rebecca or the children.
Outside the courthouse, reporters were already gathering.
Someone had leaked the recordings.
Within hours, Grant's social media post portraying himself as the victim was flooded with angry comments.
The same neighbors who had once praised him now demanded answers.
But Rebecca felt no satisfaction.
She was simply exhausted.
That evening, Megan made spaghetti while the children laughed in the living room for the first time in days.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Rebecca froze.
When she opened it...
Her father stood there.
The same gray cardigan.
The same tired eyes.
Only now, they were filled with regret.
Neither of them spoke.
Finally he whispered,
"I came to apologize."
Rebecca folded her arms.
"You already said everything when you closed the door."
He lowered his head.
"I know."
"No... you don't."
"My children slept in a car."
"My son thought his grandfather didn't love him."
"My daughter cried herself to sleep asking what she'd done wrong."
"You shut us out."
Tears filled the old man's eyes.
"I've hated myself every minute since."
Rebecca remained silent.
He took a slow breath.
"There's something you never knew."
"Grant came to see me two days before you arrived."
Rebecca's heart skipped.
"He told me you were suffering from a nervous breakdown."
"He said you were becoming violent."
"He said if I let you stay with the children, I could be investigated for helping kidnap them."
Rebecca stared at him in disbelief.
"He even brought papers."
"What papers?"
"Copies of a petition he'd already prepared."
"He convinced me the police would arrive at any moment."
Rebecca felt her knees weaken.
Grant hadn't acted on impulse.
He had planned everything.
Her father continued,
"I believed him."
"I thought refusing you for one night would force you to go back before things became worse."
His voice broke.
"I didn't realize I was helping the man who destroyed my own daughter."
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then Lily quietly walked to the doorway.
She looked at her grandfather.
"Did you really think Mommy would hurt us?"
The old man's shoulders collapsed.
"No."
"I was a coward."
He knelt before his grandchildren.
"I'm so sorry."
Grace wrapped her tiny arms around his neck without hesitation.
Children forgive far more easily than adults.
Rebecca watched the moment in silence.
She wasn't ready to forgive.
Not yet.
But for the first time...
She understood.
The closed door had not been locked by hatred.
It had been locked by fear.
As her father stood to leave, he handed Rebecca a sealed envelope.
"I should have given you this days ago."
Inside was a notarized statement.
Every conversation Grant had with him.
Every lie.
Every threat.
Every attempt to manipulate the family.
Rebecca looked up.
"Why now?"
Her father met her eyes.
"Because tomorrow..."
"I'm going to testify against my own son-in-law."
Rebecca finally allowed herself to believe that justice might actually be possible.
Tomorrow, the courtroom would hear not only the voice of Grant's mistress—
May you like
But the testimony of the father he had deceived.
And Grant's carefully constructed world was about to collapse completely.
