CHAPTER 4 — The Woman He Never Expected

CHAPTER 4 — The Woman He Never Expected

Vanessa hadn't come to defend Grant.

She had come because she had finally discovered she wasn't special.

She was disposable.

The day after Rebecca left, Grant had ended their affair.

"It's over," he'd told her coldly.

"My family needs me."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Your family?"

"You said you were filing for divorce."

"I said a lot of things."

Then he blocked her number.

For the first time, Vanessa realized she had never been the future.

She had only been the distraction.

Inside her apartment, she spread dozens of photographs across the kitchen table.

Hotel receipts.

Gift receipts.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Voice recordings.

One recording made her stomach twist.

Grant's voice.

"If Rebecca ever leaves, I'll make sure she looks crazy enough to lose the kids."

Vanessa replayed it.

Again.

Again.

Again.

She hadn't noticed that sentence months ago.

Now she couldn't stop hearing it.

Meanwhile, Rebecca settled into Megan's tiny guest room.

One mattress.

Four people.

Grace slept with her teddy bear.

Ethan curled up beside the wall.

Lily remained awake.

"Mom..."

"Yes?"

"What if Dad wins?"

Rebecca stared into the darkness.

"He won't."

"But what if he does?"

Rebecca reached for her daughter's hand.

"I will never stop fighting for you."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

Those two words nearly broke Rebecca.

The next morning, someone knocked on Megan's front door.

Rebecca looked through the peephole.

A young woman stood outside in the rain.

Blonde.

Nervous.

Holding a thick brown envelope.

Rebecca opened the door only a few inches.

"Can I help you?"

The woman swallowed.

"My name is Vanessa."

Rebecca's face turned pale.

"I know who you are."

"I deserve that."

"Leave."

"I'm not here for Grant."

Rebecca started closing the door.

Then Vanessa said seven words that stopped her cold.

"I can prove he planned everything."

Silence.

Vanessa slowly lifted the envelope.

"There are recordings."

Rebecca didn't move.

"There are bank records."

Still nothing.

"And there are messages showing he intended to take your children before you ever left."

Rebecca's hand began to tremble.

Vanessa looked her directly in the eyes.

"I helped destroy your marriage."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"But I'm here to stop him from destroying your children."

Rebecca slowly opened the door.

May you like

For the first time...

Grant's perfect plan had begun to crack.
