CHAPTER 5 — The Courtroom Betrayal

CHAPTER 5 — The Courtroom Betrayal
The county courthouse was already crowded when Rebecca arrived.
She had borrowed a navy-blue blazer from Megan. It was one size too big, but it was clean.
Lily knelt in front of her before they entered.
"You look strong, Mom."
Rebecca smiled, though her stomach felt like stone.
"I have to be."
Across the hallway stood Grant.
Perfectly pressed gray suit.
Fresh haircut.
Expensive watch.
He looked like a devoted father who had been unfairly abandoned.
His attorney leaned over and whispered something that made Grant smile.
Rebecca knew exactly what he was thinking.
I've already won.
The bailiff called everyone into the courtroom.
Judge Eleanor Brooks reviewed the emergency custody request.
Grant's attorney stood first.
"Your Honor, my client has been a loving father throughout this marriage. Three nights ago, Mrs. Walker disappeared with the children without informing anyone. She is unemployed, currently homeless, and emotionally unstable."
Rebecca wanted to object.
Her attorney—provided at the last minute through a legal aid organization—gently placed a hand on her arm.
"Wait."
Grant took the witness stand.
He lowered his eyes as if fighting tears.
"I begged my wife to stay."
"I offered counseling."
"I only want what's best for my children."
The performance was flawless.
Then came Rebecca's turn.
She spoke quietly.
She described the phone call.
The affair.
The hotel photographs.
The emptied bank accounts.
The night in the car.
The closed door at her parents' house.
Grant's attorney immediately attacked.
"Do you have proof your husband emptied the accounts out of spite?"
"No."
"Do you have proof he intended to abandon you?"
"No."
"So everything you've said depends entirely on your own interpretation."
Rebecca felt the room slipping away.
Without evidence...
Truth sounded like desperation.
Grant smiled.
Just for a second.
He thought it was over.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Every head turned.
Vanessa stepped inside.
She carried the same thick brown envelope.
Grant's face lost all color.
"What is she doing here?" he whispered.
Vanessa walked directly toward Rebecca's attorney.
"I have evidence relevant to this case."
Grant jumped to his feet.
"She's lying!"
Judge Brooks raised her voice.
"Mr. Walker, sit down."
Vanessa handed over a flash drive.
"There are recordings."
"There are text messages."
"There are bank transfer confirmations."
"And there is one conversation everyone in this courtroom needs to hear."
The courtroom audio system crackled.
Grant's own voice filled the room.
"If Rebecca ever leaves, I'll make sure she looks crazy enough to lose the kids."
Silence.
Another recording played.
"Move all the money before she notices."
Another.
"No judge gives custody to a woman living in her car."
The silence became unbearable.
Grant's attorney slowly closed his notebook.
He didn't say another word.
Judge Brooks removed her glasses.
"Mr. Walker..."
Her voice was colder than Rebecca had ever heard.
"Do you deny these recordings are yours?"
Grant opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
