CHAPTER 5 — THE BOY WITH THE FAMILIAR EYES

CHAPTER 5 — THE BOY WITH THE FAMILIAR EYES
Alexander Whitmore did not sleep for the next seventy-two hours.
His private investigators received only one instruction.
"Find Isabella Rivera."
"No matter what it costs."
Within days they uncovered fragments of a life that had never appeared in society magazines.
Hospital records confirmed Isabella had been discharged from a Los Angeles public hospital six years earlier.
A bus ticket.
A temporary shelter.
Then...
Nothing.
She had disappeared with remarkable precision.
No luxury purchases.
No social media.
No interviews.
No trace.
It was as though she had erased herself from the world.
Alexander admired that.
She had escaped the Whitmore name completely.
Three weeks later, one investigator entered his office carrying a thin folder.
"We found her."
Alexander stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
"Where?"
"Seattle."
The investigator hesitated.
"She owns a small accounting firm now."
Alexander blinked.
"She owns it?"
"Yes."
"Started with one client."
"Now she employs twelve people."
He stared silently at the photographs.
Isabella looked different.
Her hair was shorter.
She wore simple business clothes.
There was confidence in her posture.
Peace in her smile.
She looked...
Happy.
Without him.
The realization hurt more than he expected.
Then the investigator quietly placed another photograph on the desk.
"This is why we believe you'll want to travel immediately."
Alexander looked down.
A little boy.
Perhaps six years old.
Dark hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
Laughing while chasing pigeons in a city park.
Alexander stopped breathing.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The shape of the jaw.
The eyebrows.
Even the crooked smile Alexander had inherited from his grandfather.
His hands began to tremble.
"Who..."
The investigator answered softly.
"His name is Gabriel Rivera."
"No father listed on school records."
Alexander whispered,
"My son..."
Two days later he landed in Seattle.
He rented an ordinary sedan instead of bringing security.
No assistants.
No lawyers.
No reporters.
Only guilt.
He parked across from Rivera Financial Solutions just before five o'clock.
Employees slowly left the office.
Then he saw her.
Isabella.
She locked the front door before kneeling beside a little boy waiting patiently with a backpack.
She kissed his forehead.
The child grinned.
Then wrapped both arms around her neck.
Alexander watched through blurred vision.
That should have been familiar.
It wasn't.
He had missed every ordinary miracle.
Gabriel suddenly looked across the street.
Straight toward Alexander's car.
For one strange moment...
Father and son stared at each other.
Neither understood why the other looked so familiar.
Gabriel tugged Isabella's sleeve.
"Mom?"
She turned.
Her eyes met Alexander's.
Time collapsed.
The color drained from her face.
The smile disappeared.
Every memory returned at once.
Rain.
Suitcases.
The mansion gate.
His last words.
Alexander slowly stepped out of the car.
"Isabella..."
She instinctively moved in front of Gabriel.
Shielding him.
Exactly as she had promised herself six years earlier.
Her voice became ice.
"What are you doing here?"
"I've been looking for you."
"You found me."
"Now leave."
Gabriel looked between them curiously.
"Mom..."
"It's okay."
"No, sweetheart."
She never looked away from Alexander.
"It's not."
Alexander swallowed hard.
"I need to talk to you."
"You lost that privilege."
"Please."
"There is nothing left to say."
He looked toward Gabriel.
The little boy studied him with innocent curiosity.
Alexander felt tears threaten.
"Is he..."
Isabella's expression hardened instantly.
"No."
The single word arrived too quickly.
Too defensively.
Alexander noticed.
"So he is."
"I said no."
"You lied."
"You taught me how."
Silence exploded between them.
People walking nearby slowed to watch.
Alexander lowered his voice.
"I know about the clinic."
For the first time...
Fear crossed Isabella's face.
"You spoke to Dr. Morgan."
"She couldn't tell me anything."
"But she told me enough."
He took one careful step closer.
"Were you pregnant?"
Her breathing became uneven.
She looked at Gabriel.
Then back at Alexander.
Finally she answered.
"Yes."
One word.
Barely audible.
Yet it shattered the world.
Alexander staggered backward.
"My God..."
She continued before he could speak.
"I found out the morning after your family threw me onto the street."
Every sentence struck like a hammer.
"You told me you never loved me."
"You watched your mother beat me."
"You abandoned me."
"So I buried every part of you that I could."
Alexander's voice cracked.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
She laughed.
It wasn't joyful.
It sounded exhausted.
"Tell you?"
"The man who left me bleeding outside his gate?"
"The man who already had another pregnant woman?"
"The man who never once searched for me?"
"I searched!"
She shook her head.
"Six years too late."
Gabriel quietly reached for Isabella's hand.
"Mom..."
"I'm okay."
May you like
She wasn't.
Neither of them was.
