CHAPTER 2 — THE HEARTBEAT THEY SAID WOULD NEVER EXIST

CHAPTER 2 — THE HEARTBEAT THEY SAID WOULD NEVER EXIST

The fluorescent lights above Isabella's hospital bed buzzed softly.

For several seconds she could not remember why every part of her body hurt.

Then she touched the bruise blooming across her cheek.

The dinner.

The divorce papers.

Grace's hand.

Alexander's eyes.

Everything came back at once.

She turned away and covered her face.

Not to cry.

She had cried enough for people who had never deserved a single tear.

Nurse Leah returned carrying a paper cup of water.

"You collapsed from dehydration and a high fever," she explained. "Someone found you outside the Whitmore estate around three in the morning."

"Someone?"

"A taxi driver. He said he couldn't leave you there."

A stranger.

A stranger had shown her more mercy than the man who had called himself her husband.

Isabella swallowed painfully.

"I don't have insurance anymore."

Leah smiled gently.

"Don't worry about that today."

Those simple words almost broke her.

An hour later, an older physician entered carrying a clipboard.

He introduced himself as Dr. Michael Chen.

"I'd like to ask a few questions."

She nodded weakly.

"When was your last menstrual cycle?"

She frowned.

"I... I'm not sure."

Stress.

Fertility treatments.

Hormone injections.

Nothing about her body had been regular for years.

Dr. Chen scribbled a note.

"We ran routine blood work while you were unconscious."

He looked at her carefully.

"Mrs. Whitmore..."

She interrupted quietly.

"It's just Isabella."

He nodded.

"Isabella."

Then he smiled.

"The blood test showed elevated hCG levels."

She blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"We repeated it twice to eliminate laboratory error."

Silence.

"We also performed an ultrasound."

He turned the monitor toward her.

A tiny gray shape appeared on the screen.

Barely recognizable.

Then—

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

A rapid rhythm filled the room.

"What..."

Her voice disappeared.

Dr. Chen looked at her over his glasses.

"That's your baby's heartbeat."

The world stopped.

"No."

She whispered it instinctively.

"No... that's impossible."

The doctor folded his hands.

"I've reviewed your medical history."

"You were told pregnancy would be extremely difficult."

"Difficult isn't impossible."

He pointed gently at the screen.

"You're approximately nine weeks pregnant."

Nine weeks.

Nine weeks.

Her mind raced backward.

Nine weeks earlier...

Alexander had surprised her with a weekend trip to Napa Valley after another failed fertility appointment.

He had held her while she cried.

He had kissed her forehead.

He had whispered—

"We'll keep trying."

Only a few weeks later...

He had already moved Tessa into their lives.

Had he already been cheating then?

The realization struck harder than any slap.

Isabella stared at the flickering heartbeat.

The child existed.

The miracle everyone had prayed for.

The miracle Grace Whitmore had insisted would never happen.

The miracle Alexander had replaced her before he even knew existed.

Tears slid silently down her face.

Not from grief.

From disbelief.

"I'm... really pregnant?"

Dr. Chen smiled.

"Very much so."

That afternoon another doctor entered.

Unlike Dr. Chen, she did not smile.

She carried several charts.

"I'm Dr. Evelyn Brooks, maternal-fetal medicine."

Her serious expression immediately frightened Isabella.

"Is something wrong?"

The doctor sat beside her bed.

"I want to be honest with you."

"You've suffered severe physical trauma."

"The bruising concerns me."

"So does your stress level."

She paused.

"And there are signs of early placental instability."

The words barely made sense.

"What does that mean?"

"It means this pregnancy is high risk."

Her stomach twisted.

"Can I lose the baby?"

Dr. Brooks didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

The room became painfully quiet.

"But."

The doctor leaned forward.

"If you eliminate stress, receive proper prenatal care, and avoid further physical trauma..."

"...your baby has an excellent chance."

Isabella instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

The tiny heartbeat continued echoing inside her memory.

Someone was alive because of her.

Someone depended on her.

For the first time since being thrown out...

She had a reason to survive.

That evening her phone finally turned on after charging.

Thirty-eight missed calls.

Not from Alexander.

Not from Grace.

Every single one came from lawyers.

Messages flooded her screen.

SIGN THE DIVORCE.

YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS HAVE BEEN PACKED.

FAILURE TO RESPOND WILL RESULT IN LEGAL ACTION.

There wasn't a single message asking if she was alive.

Then one final notification appeared.

A photograph.

Alexander.

Standing beside Tessa.

His arm wrapped proudly around her waist.

A diamond ring sparkled beneath the restaurant lights.

Caption:

"Our forever begins. Baby Whitmore arriving this winter."

More than fifty thousand likes.

Thousands of congratulations.

People celebrating the child that had replaced her.

No one knew another Whitmore baby already existed.

She deleted the picture.

Then switched off the phone.

Forever.

Three days later, Isabella quietly signed only one document.

Not the divorce papers.

The hospital discharge forms.

She had nowhere to go.

No family nearby.

No savings.

Grace had insisted every paycheck from the family charity be deposited into Alexander's business account "for financial efficiency."

She owned almost nothing.

Except the child growing inside her.

Leah caught her leaving through the hospital lobby.

"Wait."

She handed Isabella a folded envelope.

"One of our patients left this for you."

Inside was five hundred dollars in cash.

No signature.

Only a handwritten note.

Everyone deserves one chance to start over.

Isabella looked around.

"Who gave this?"

Leah smiled.

"He asked us not to tell you."

"He said someday you'll help someone else."

She walked out into the warm California afternoon carrying one small suitcase.

No mansion.

No husband.

No future she had once imagined.

Only an unborn child.

She stopped at a busy intersection and looked up at the endless traffic.

Then she whispered a promise only one tiny heartbeat could hear.

"I don't know where we're going."

"But I swear..."

"I will never let anyone throw you away the way they threw me away."

Across the city...

Inside the Whitmore mansion...

Grace lifted a champagne glass.

"To the future heir."

Everyone applauded.

Alexander forced a smile.

Yet for reasons he couldn't explain...

His chest suddenly tightened.

As if somewhere in the world...

Something precious had just slipped beyond his reach forever.

May you like

Neither he nor anyone else at that glittering table realized that the only child who carried the true Whitmore bloodline had just disappeared from their lives.

For the next six years.
