CHAPTER 6 — THE CUSTODY PAPERS THAT NEVER CAME

CHAPTER 6 — THE CUSTODY PAPERS THAT NEVER CAME

The next morning, Harper received a call from her attorney.

"There may be a problem."

Her heart tightened immediately.

"What happened?"

"Caleb Morrison requested a meeting."

Harper's expression hardened.

"He wants custody?"

"No."

She frowned.

"What then?"

"He refused to discuss anything over the phone."

Thirty minutes later, Harper entered the law office expecting a fight.

Instead, she found Caleb sitting quietly with a thick folder on the conference table.

His own attorney sat beside him.

Everyone looked unusually serious.

Caleb stood as Harper entered.

"Thank you for coming."

"Let's get this over with."

He nodded.

His lawyer slid a document across the table.

Harper glanced at the title.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF PATERNITY

Below it lay another document.

WAIVER OF IMMEDIATE CUSTODY PETITION

Her eyes narrowed.

She looked at Caleb.

"What is this?"

He answered without hesitation.

"I am legally recognizing Lily as my daughter."

"I expected that."

"The second document states I will not seek immediate custody."

The room became silent.

Even Harper's attorney looked surprised.

Caleb continued.

"I have no right to walk into her life and demand fifty percent of it."

Harper stared at him.

He pushed another folder toward her.

Inside were financial statements.

Education trusts.

Medical insurance.

Investment accounts.

Every document had Lily's name.

"I've established a trust fund that she can access when she's eighteen."

Harper closed the folder.

"I don't need your money."

"I know."

"It's hers."

"I've taken care of her for two years."

"And you've done it perfectly."

His voice softened.

"I'm not trying to replace you."

He took a long breath.

"I'm trying to stop failing her."

The words hung in the room.

For the first time...

Harper believed he meant them.

Weeks passed.

Caleb never missed a scheduled visit.

He never arrived late.

Never pushed boundaries.

Never demanded more time.

He let Lily decide everything.

One afternoon, they sat together in a park feeding ducks.

Lily giggled as one greedy duck stole an entire slice of bread.

Caleb laughed.

"You think that's funny?"

She nodded enthusiastically.

"Very funny!"

He smiled.

"You laugh exactly like your mom."

"No."

Lily shook her head with complete confidence.

"Mommy says I laugh too loud."

He chuckled.

"I think it's perfect."

She looked at him curiously.

"Why do you always smile when you look at me?"

His throat tightened.

"Because..."

He struggled to find words a two-year-old could understand.

"...you make my heart happy."

She accepted the answer immediately.

Children didn't need complicated explanations.

Only honest ones.

From a distance, Harper watched the scene.

For the first time since the gala...

She saw something she hadn't expected.

Caleb wasn't trying to impress Lily.

He wasn't trying to buy her affection with toys or expensive gifts.

He was content just sitting on the grass, letting her hand him pieces of bread to feed the ducks.

It looked...

Natural.

Almost painfully so.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

She opened it.

It was Sarah.

Can we meet?

There's something you deserve to know about the night your marriage ended.

Harper stared at the message.

A strange feeling settled in her stomach.

Because whatever Sarah wanted to confess...

It had waited more than two years.

May you like

And somehow...

Harper knew it was about to change everything she believed about the night Caleb chose another woman.
