CHAPTER 4 — THE LETTER HARPER NEVER SENT

CHAPTER 4 — THE LETTER HARPER NEVER SENT
Three days after the gala...
A plain white envelope arrived at Harper's front door.
No return address.
Only her name written in handwriting she recognized instantly.
Caleb.
She stared at it for almost five minutes before opening it.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
No legal language.
No excuses disguised as explanations.
Just ink that had clearly been blurred by tears.
Harper,
I don't deserve your time, and I certainly don't deserve forgiveness.
I now understand that the greatest tragedy of my life isn't that I lost my marriage.
It's that I missed two years of our daughter's life because of decisions I made willingly.
I have replayed that night a thousand times.
If I had walked upstairs five minutes earlier...
If I had chosen one honest conversation instead of one secret phone call...
If I had remembered the promises I made to you...
Lily would know my voice.
Instead, she called me "Mister."
I have never heard a word hurt more.
I don't expect you to forgive me.
I don't expect Lily to accept me.
I only ask for one chance to become someone she might someday be proud to know.
Even if that chance comes years from now.
Caleb.
Harper folded the letter slowly.
She felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Because once...
This letter would have saved her marriage.
Now...
It arrived two years too late.
She placed it inside a wooden memory box.
Not with photographs of Caleb.
Those had all been thrown away after the divorce.
Instead...
She placed it beside Lily's ultrasound picture.
A reminder of the night everything changed.
Not because Caleb had left.
But because she had chosen to stay strong.
Later that evening, Lily climbed onto Harper's lap with her favorite storybook.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do I have a daddy?"
The question froze the room.
Harper had always known this day would come.
She simply hadn't expected it so soon.
She brushed Lily's dark hair behind her ear.
"You do."
"Where is he?"
Harper looked out at the sunset over Seattle.
"He got lost."
Lily frowned.
"Can we help him find us?"
Harper closed her eyes.
Before she could answer...
The doorbell rang.
One ring.
Then another.
Slow.
Respectful.
Not demanding.
Harper's heart began pounding.
She already knew who stood on the other side of that door.
And as she walked toward it, she made herself one promise.
This time...
Caleb Morrison would not be allowed back into their lives because of guilt.
If he wanted the privilege of knowing his daughter...
May you like
He would have to earn it.
One honest step at a time.
