CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Lies

CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Lies

The black SUV disappeared before anyone noticed it.

But two days later, Melissa called me just after sunrise.

"Audrey, don't go anywhere."

Her voice was urgent.

"We've arrested Arthur."

"I thought he was already in custody."

"He was."

"He asked to speak."

"To me?"

"Yes."

Against every instinct, I agreed.

The interrogation room smelled of cold coffee and stale air.

Arthur looked nothing like the man who had slapped me at graduation.

His expensive suit had been replaced by a gray jail uniform.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

For the first time in my life...

He looked afraid.

When I sat down, he didn't insult me.

He didn't yell.

Instead, he whispered,

"You have to leave town."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"They're coming."

"Who's coming?"

He rubbed his trembling hands together.

"The people I worked for."

Melissa and the detectives exchanged confused looks.

"You expect us to believe someone forced you to steal from your own daughter?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"It started twenty-four years ago."

He confessed that after losing most of his business investments, he owed millions to a financial syndicate that specialized in identity fraud and money laundering.

Instead of prison, they offered him a deal.

Recruit vulnerable identities.

Create fake financial profiles.

Steal government education funds.

Open fraudulent accounts.

Wash the money through shell companies.

"And my identity?" I asked.

"You had a clean record."

"You were a child."

"They said you were... perfect."

My stomach turned.

"So my own father sold my future."

He lowered his head.

"Yes."

Before anyone could speak again, the interrogation room door burst open.

A detective rushed inside.

"They've hit three more locations."

"What?"

"The storage facilities."

"Someone is destroying evidence."

Melissa immediately stood.

"They know Arthur is talking."

Arthur's face lost all color.

"I told you."

"They're coming."

At that exact moment...

Every light inside the police station went dark.

Emergency alarms blared.

Backup generators failed.

For nearly twenty terrifying seconds...

The building was swallowed by complete darkness.

When the lights returned...

Arthur was slumped forward.

A tiny dart protruded from his neck.

Doctors fought for nearly an hour.

He never regained consciousness.

His final confession died with him.

But before investigators removed his belongings, they found one last item hidden inside his shoe.

A flash drive.

It contained thousands of encrypted files.
