CHAPTER 5 — The Grandmother They Erased

CHAPTER 5 — The Grandmother They Erased

My hands trembled as I carefully opened the oldest envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The date stopped me cold.

It had been written thirteen years after my parents told me my grandmother had died.

I unfolded it.

The first line stole the air from my lungs.

My dearest Audrey, if you're reading this, then someone finally failed to keep us apart.

Tears blurred my vision.

The next words hurt even more.

I have written to you every birthday since you were five years old. Every Christmas. Every graduation. Every milestone I could imagine. Every letter has been returned unopened, or simply disappeared.

I couldn't breathe.

All those years...

I thought she had abandoned me.

Instead, she had been reaching for me the entire time.

Melissa quietly asked, "Would you like a moment?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"I've lost enough time already."

I kept reading.

Your parents blame me for what happened to your grandfather's estate. They believe I chose you over them. The truth is, your grandfather saw who they really were long before anyone else did.

"What estate?" I whispered.

Melissa looked up.

"There was an inheritance?"

A detective searched another file box.

"Found a will."

The room fell silent.

The attorney representing the investigation carefully unfolded the document.

"My goodness..."

He adjusted his glasses.

"Arthur and Victoria have been lying for decades."

Everyone leaned closer.

According to my grandfather's will, his estate had been divided into three trusts.

One for my father.

One for charitable organizations.

And one...

For me.

A trust worth nearly three million dollars.

The money wasn't available until I graduated from college.

The room went completely silent.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The lies.

The humiliation.

The fake financial struggles.

Their desperate attempts to convince everyone I had dropped out.

If I never graduated...

The trust would remain frozen.

They had spent four years trying to stop me from reaching the one milestone that would put the inheritance beyond their control.

Melissa looked at me.

"They didn't hate your success."

"They feared it."

Another detective interrupted.

"We found wire transfers."

"From the trust?"

"No."

"To it."

He projected the records onto the wall.

Every year...

Someone had quietly deposited money into my trust.

Thousands of dollars.

Always from the same anonymous account.

Melissa frowned.

"Who would do that?"

The attorney smiled faintly.

"I think I know."

He held up another sealed envelope.

Written across the front were the words:

To Be Opened Only After Audrey Graduates.

Inside was a letter from my grandmother.

My beautiful granddaughter, if you're reading this, then you did it. I always believed you would. I couldn't protect you while I was alive, but I promised your grandfather I would never stop trying. Every year I secretly added to your trust so they could never empty it. They stole many things from you, but they will never steal your future.

I broke down crying.

For the first time in years...

They weren't tears of pain.

They were tears of finally being loved.

Just then, Melissa's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds before looking at me.

"We've located your grandmother's attorney."

I smiled through my tears.

"I thought she was gone."

Melissa hesitated.

"He says there's something else."

"Something your grandmother never told anyone."

May you like

"What?"

"She wasn't the only person protecting you."
