CHAPTER 4 — The House of Lies

CHAPTER 4 — The House of Lies
Three days later, I stood outside the house I had once called home.
Yellow police tape stretched across the front porch.
Neighbors watched from behind curtains.
News vans lined the street.
The Vance family had become the biggest story in town.
Melissa met me at the front door.
"We received a search warrant."
She handed me a pair of gloves.
"There are some things we'd like you to identify."
Walking inside felt surreal.
Nothing had changed.
The family portraits still hung on the walls.
Julian's football trophies still filled the shelves.
There wasn't a single picture of me.
Just like when I lived there.
As if I had never existed.
Officers searched every room.
One detective called out.
"Found something."
Everyone gathered in Arthur's home office.
Behind a locked cabinet was a small fireproof safe.
Inside...
There were stacks of cash.
Passports.
Property deeds.
And dozens of neatly labeled folders.
Each carried a different name.
Mine was on top.
I opened it.
Inside were copies of every document stolen from me.
Birth certificate.
Social Security records.
Tax returns.
Scholarship paperwork.
Even medical records.
Someone had built an entire financial identity using my name.
Melissa quietly said,
"This wasn't random."
"This was organized."
Another detective opened a second folder.
Then a third.
Then a fourth.
Each belonged to a different young person.
Former foster children.
Exchange students.
College applicants.
People with little family support.
My stomach twisted.
"They didn't just do this to me."
Melissa nodded.
"No."
"They've been doing it for years."
One officer hurried into the room carrying a laptop.
"You need to see this."
The hard drive contained encrypted accounting files.
After the forensic technician unlocked them, a spreadsheet appeared.
Hundreds of transactions.
Thousands of dollars moving between accounts.
One column caught my eye.
"Project Legacy."
"What is that?" I asked.
Melissa frowned.
"We don't know yet."
Then another officer spoke from upstairs.
"We found a hidden room."
Everyone rushed to the second floor.
Behind the master bedroom closet was a concealed door.
Inside was a cramped office.
Shelves were packed with file boxes.
Printers.
Document scanners.
Signature stamps.
Blank identification cards.
It looked less like a home...
...and more like a professional identity fraud operation.
One detective exhaled slowly.
"My God."
Melissa turned toward me.
"Audrey..."
"I think your parents weren't simply stealing from you."
"They were running a criminal enterprise."
Before I could respond, another officer walked in holding an old cardboard box.
"It was hidden under the floorboards."
The label read:
AUDREY — DO NOT DESTROY
My hands shook as I lifted the lid.
Inside were childhood photographs.
Birthday cards.
Elementary school drawings.
Letters.
Dozens of letters.
Every one addressed to me.
None had ever been opened.
The first envelope was postmarked eighteen years earlier.
In the corner, written in elegant handwriting, were four words that changed my life forever.
From Your Grandmother, Eleanor.
I stared at the envelope in disbelief.
"My grandmother died when I was five."
Melissa looked at the postmark.
"No..."
She whispered.
"According to this..."
May you like
"She was alive."
"And someone made sure you never knew."
