CHAPTER 6 – The Secret That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 6 – The Secret That Changed Everything

The criminal charges spread through our town faster than I expected.

People whispered in grocery stores.

Church members avoided my parents.

Neighbors who had stayed silent for years suddenly remembered things they had seen.

Then, on Friday afternoon, someone knocked on my apartment door.

A man in his early sixties stood outside holding a worn leather folder.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you."

"I don't think we've met."

"My name is Richard Hale."

He hesitated.

"I used to work with your father."

Something in his voice told me this wasn't a social visit.

"I heard about what happened."

He looked genuinely saddened.

"I've carried something for almost twenty years."

He handed me the folder.

"I think it belongs to you."

Inside were faded photographs.

Old letters.

Copies of reports.

My stomach tightened.

The first photo showed me.

I couldn't have been older than five.

A purple bruise covered my arm.

Another photo showed a cut above my eyebrow.

I looked up at him.

"What is this?"

Richard sighed deeply.

"Your elementary school reported suspected abuse."

"What?"

"More than once."

I felt the room spin.

"The school counselor contacted Child Protective Services."

My hands began shaking.

"I was there when your father came to pick you up."

His face hardened.

"He convinced everyone you were clumsy."

I stared at the photographs.

"I don't remember."

"You were very young."

He looked toward the window.

"There was never enough evidence."

The words hit me like another punch.

Never enough evidence.

Until now.

Richard pointed to one document near the bottom of the folder.

"You should read that one."

It was a handwritten statement.

Signed by my late grandmother.

My father's own mother.

As I unfolded the paper, tears blurred my vision.

The first sentence stole the air from my lungs.

Grant has been hurting Natalie for years, and I fear one day he will kill her if nobody stops him.

My grandmother had known.

She had tried to warn people.

Nobody listened.

Richard swallowed hard.

"She begged the family to protect you."

"What happened?"

"They told her to stay out of it."

I lowered my head.

Even Grandma hadn't been able to stop them.

Richard gently placed a hand on the table.

"I kept copies because I always feared something terrible would happen."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"When I saw your father's arrest on the news..."

He pushed the folder toward me.

"I knew the truth had finally caught up with him."

As soon as he left, I called Officer Brooks.

"I have more evidence."

"What kind?"

I looked again at my grandmother's statement.

My voice shook.

"Evidence that this didn't start last week."

"It started when I was a little girl."

There was a long silence before he answered.

"Natalie..."

"If that's true..."

May you like

He paused.

"This case is about to become much bigger than anyone imagined."
