CHAPTER 5 – They Tried to Destroy My Career

CHAPTER 5 – They Tried to Destroy My Career
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I felt my father's hand tangled in my hair again.
By seven the next morning, my phone had over forty missed calls.
Most weren't from people asking how I was.
They were demanding that I "fix" what I had done.
My Aunt Cheryl left a voicemail.
"Your father made one mistake. You're ruining his entire life."
One mistake.
I replayed those words over and over.
Dragging me across concrete.
Kicking me into a trash can.
Years of fear.
Years of bruises.
Apparently, all of that counted as one mistake.
At nine o'clock, I walked into the hospital's Human Resources office.
My palms were still bandaged.
A faint bruise circled my left eye.
Inside sat Human Resources Director Angela Morris and the hospital's legal counsel.
Angela motioned toward a chair.
"Natalie, thank you for coming."
She looked concerned rather than suspicious, which eased my nerves slightly.
"We've received nine phone calls since yesterday."
"Nine?"
She nodded.
"They came from different people."
She slid a printed sheet across the desk.
I recognized several names immediately.
My uncle.
My mother's cousin.
Two family friends.
Even Brittany.
Each caller claimed I was mentally unstable.
That I had assaulted my father.
That I was inventing abuse for money.
That I shouldn't be allowed to care for patients.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
Angela leaned forward.
"Before we take any action, we want to hear from you."
Without saying a word, I connected my phone to the conference room monitor.
The recording filled the room.
Nobody interrupted.
Nobody looked away.
When my father laughed and shouted, "Useless things belong in the dump," the hospital attorney slowly removed his glasses.
When my mother said I had no future, Angela quietly covered her mouth.
The video ended.
Silence lingered for several seconds.
Finally, the attorney spoke.
"I've been practicing employment law for twenty-three years."
He looked directly at me.
"I've never seen family members coordinate a false complaint campaign this quickly."
Angela folded the complaint forms.
"They're not investigating you."
She dropped the stack into a shred bin.
"They're harassing you."
Relief washed over me.
Then Angela added something unexpected.
"We're documenting every call."
"Why?"
"Because attempting to interfere with someone's employment after reporting abuse may become relevant in court."
For the first time since the assault, I realized something.
My family wasn't just losing.
They were digging themselves into a deeper hole with every lie they told.
That afternoon, my father proved exactly how desperate he had become.
As I walked out of the hospital, I froze.
His black pickup truck was parked across the street.
He stepped out before I reached my Corolla.
"Natalie."
I immediately turned around.
"I don't want to talk."
"You don't have a choice."
Officer Brooks' advice echoed in my head.
If he approaches you again, don't engage. Stay in public.
I pulled out my phone.
"I'm recording."
Dad's face twitched.
"So that's how it's going to be?"
"Yes."
He took another step.
"You've embarrassed this family."
"No."
"You embarrassed yourself."
His expression darkened.
"You think you're better than us because you're a nurse?"
"I think you shouldn't have assaulted your daughter."
His jaw tightened.
"You always twisted everything."
I lifted my phone slightly.
"It's recording."
He immediately looked around the parking lot.
People were watching.
Nurses.
Visitors.
Security.
His voice softened instantly.
"Natalie... sweetheart..."
The change was almost frightening.
Only when witnesses appeared did he become gentle.
"I love you."
The words sounded rehearsed.
"You don't destroy people you love."
I got into my car.
As I drove away, I watched him shrink in the rearview mirror.
For the first time in my life...
He looked powerless.
Three days later, Officer Brooks called.
"We've filed the charges."
My hands trembled around the phone.
"What charges?"
"Felony assault."
I couldn't breathe.
"And witness intimidation is being reviewed because of the coordinated harassment."
I closed my eyes.
It was finally happening.
May you like
Justice wasn't just possible anymore.
It had started.
