CHAPTER 4 – Everything Began Falling Apart

CHAPTER 4 – Everything Began Falling Apart
The emergency room where I worked was only fifteen minutes away.
This time, I wasn't the nurse.
I was the patient.
Another nurse, Maria, gasped when she saw my injuries.
"Natalie... what happened?"
I looked at her for several seconds.
Normally, I would have lied.
"I fell."
"I slipped."
"I walked into something."
Instead, I answered honestly.
"My father assaulted me."
Maria's expression changed instantly.
She squeezed my hand.
"I'm so sorry."
Within an hour, photographs documented every injury.
Bruises covered my ribs.
My hip was badly swollen.
The doctor confirmed patches of hair had been forcibly torn from my scalp.
Several tiny stones had to be removed from my palms.
Each photograph became evidence.
Each medical note became proof.
As I sat alone in the examination room, my phone buzzed.
Dad.
Declined.
Mom.
Declined.
Brittany.
Blocked.
Then another message arrived.
Unknown number.
You are destroying this family.
Delete.
Another.
Dad could lose his job because of you.
Delete.
Another.
You always wanted attention. Congratulations.
Delete.
The messages kept coming.
Aunts.
Uncles.
Cousins.
People who hadn't spoken to me in months suddenly became experts on forgiveness.
Not one of them asked if I was okay.
Not one asked whether the recording was real.
Only one question mattered to them.
Why couldn't I keep it quiet?
Late that evening, Officer Brooks returned to the hospital.
He carried a folder.
"We've reviewed the recording."
He sat across from me.
"Based on the video, the witness statement, and your medical examination..."
He paused.
"We're recommending criminal charges."
I stared at him.
For so long, justice had felt imaginary.
Now it was sitting across from me.
"There is one more thing," he said.
"We ran into something unusual."
"What?"
He opened the folder.
"There were previous calls to your address."
My heart stopped.
"What kind of calls?"
"Neighbors reporting yelling."
"One welfare check."
"Two anonymous complaints."
I frowned.
"I never knew."
"You wouldn't."
He looked down at the paperwork.
"Each time, someone in the home insisted everything was fine."
I already knew who.
Mom.
She had always been convincing.
Officer Brooks looked back at me.
"Can I ask you something?"
I nodded.
"Has your father hurt you before?"
The room became very quiet.
Images flashed through my mind.
Being slapped for dropping a glass at thirteen.
Locked outside overnight at sixteen.
Having birthday presents thrown into the fireplace.
Being told every mistake was proof I would never succeed.
I realized something terrifying.
I couldn't remember the first time he hit me.
Because there had been too many.
I met Officer Brooks' eyes.
"Yes."
His expression hardened.
"Then this case just became much bigger than one afternoon."
At that exact moment, my phone rang again.
This time, it wasn't family.
It was Human Resources from the hospital.
"Natalie?"
"Yes."
"We've received several phone calls today."
My stomach dropped.
"They're claiming you assaulted your own father and fabricated evidence."
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
If they couldn't silence me...
They would destroy my career instead.
What they didn't know...
May you like
Was that this time, I had proof.
And I wasn't going to stop until the truth destroyed every lie they had ever built.
