CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET ELEANOR HAD KEPT FOR THIRTY YEARS

CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET ELEANOR HAD KEPT FOR THIRTY YEARS

Cassandra looked around the room one last time.

No one met her eyes.

Not her father.

Not her grandmother.

Not Adrian.

Not even the servants who had once obeyed her every command.

Her voice trembled.

"You'll all regret this."

She picked up her designer handbag and walked toward the front door.

Halfway there, she stopped.

She expected Adrian to call her back.

To forgive her.

To choose love over pride.

He never spoke.

The massive doors closed behind her.

For the first time since arriving at the Wolfe estate...

The mansion felt peaceful.

Marco nodded to two security guards.

"Escort Miss Hale's belongings to the gate."

"She is no longer authorized to enter this property."

"Effective immediately."

"Yes, sir."

Richard watched silently.

He knew there was nothing left to say.

Before leaving, he turned to Adrian.

"If there's ever a way for my family to make amends..."

Adrian answered quietly.

"There is."

Richard waited.

"Treat people with dignity."

"Whether they own a mansion..."

"...or a mop."

Richard gave a slow nod.

"I understand."

He and Margaret left together.

The convoy disappeared through the iron gates.

Inside the mansion, the tension finally lifted.

Lily tugged gently on Adrian's sleeve.

"Uncle Adrian?"

He smiled.

"Yes?"

"Can Grandma stop cleaning now?"

A soft laugh spread through the room.

Even Eleanor smiled through her tears.

"I think she can."

Lily grinned.

"Good."

"Because she's really bad at pretending she's not tired."

Everyone laughed again.

It was the first genuine laughter the house had heard in months.

That evening, Adrian prepared dinner himself.

The chefs protested.

He ignored them.

He burned the first batch of steaks.

Overcooked the vegetables.

Dropped an entire bowl of mashed potatoes on the floor.

Lily laughed so hard she nearly fell off her chair.

"It tastes funny."

"I know."

Adrian laughed.

"I've never cooked before."

"You'll learn."

She answered seriously.

"Grandma taught me that nobody starts out good at anything."

Eleanor watched them from across the table.

For years, she had feared the ruthless world had stolen her son's heart forever.

Tonight...

She saw the little boy she had raised.

After dinner, Eleanor asked Adrian to walk with her to the cliff overlooking the Atlantic.

The waves crashed against the rocks below.

The sky glowed with stars.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Eleanor broke the silence.

"I have something I've hidden from you."

Adrian frowned.

"What is it?"

She took a deep breath.

"The day your father died..."

"He wasn't killed because of gambling."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"That's what everyone told me."

"They lied."

She slowly reached into her coat pocket.

From an old envelope, she removed a faded newspaper clipping and a worn photograph.

The picture showed Adrian's father standing beside a younger Richard Hale...

...and another man Adrian had never seen before.

"They were partners," Eleanor said softly.

"They were building a shipping company together."

Adrian stared at the photograph.

"My father knew Richard?"

"Very well."

"They trusted each other."

"Then what happened?"

Eleanor looked toward the ocean.

"There was a fourth partner."

"A man named Victor Kane."

"He wanted to use the company to smuggle weapons."

"Your father refused."

"So did Richard."

"But Victor..."

Her voice shook.

"...didn't accept no."

Adrian felt his heartbeat quicken.

"I've never heard that name."

"You weren't supposed to."

"Richard and I agreed to bury the truth."

"We wanted you to grow up free from revenge."

Adrian closed his fist around the old photograph.

"Victor Kane..."

"Is he dead?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"I hoped he was."

Before she could say another word...

Marco came running across the lawn.

"Boss!"

Adrian turned.

"What happened?"

Marco's face was pale.

"We've got a problem."

"Our surveillance team just confirmed it."

"Victor Kane..."

"...is alive."

A heavy silence settled over the cliff.

Marco swallowed.

"And there's something worse."

"He returned to the city three weeks ago."

Adrian frowned.

"So?"

Marco hesitated.

Then he spoke the words that made everyone's blood run cold.

"He wasn't interested in your business..."

"He came looking for Lily."

Eleanor gasped.

The old photograph slipped from Adrian's hand and drifted into the night wind.

Somewhere beyond the crashing waves...

A black SUV sat parked on the coastal highway.

Inside, a scarred man watched the Wolfe estate through binoculars.

He smiled.

May you like

"So..."

"I finally found the girl."
