CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF HUMILIATION

CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF HUMILIATION
For three long seconds, Cassandra simply stared at Adrian.
Then she laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she refused to believe this was real.
"You'll calm down," she said with a forced smile. "You're emotional because of your mother."
She stepped closer.
"We'll talk after dinner."
Adrian didn't move.
"There won't be a dinner."
"There won't be a wedding."
"There won't be an 'us.'"
The smile disappeared from Cassandra's face.
"You would throw away three years together?"
"No."
Adrian answered quietly.
"You threw them away."
She looked around the room, expecting someone to defend her.
Nobody did.
Every servant kept their eyes lowered.
Even the guards avoided looking at her.
Finally she snapped.
"Oh, stop acting like saints!"
She pointed at the staff.
"They all obeyed me."
"They all watched."
"If I'm guilty, then so are they."
Adrian nodded once.
"They'll answer for their silence."
"You're answering for your cruelty."
She folded her arms.
"You think people will believe your poor little family story?"
"My father sits on the board of Hale Capital."
"My uncle knows governors."
"My friends own newspapers."
"You destroy me..."
"...and you'll start a war."
Marco glanced toward Adrian.
Everyone knew what that meant.
The Hale family wasn't just wealthy.
They were powerful.
Business magazines called the engagement the merger of two American dynasties.
Walking away would cost billions.
Adrian looked completely unconcerned.
"I've survived wars with men who solved disagreements using bullets."
"I'm not afraid of people who solve them with lawyers."
Cassandra's confidence wavered.
"You need my family's connections."
Adrian smiled for the first time that evening.
It wasn't a warm smile.
"I built my empire before I ever met you."
"You were never part of my success."
"You were simply invited to enjoy it."
The words hit harder than a slap.
Her cheeks flushed crimson.
"You ungrateful—"
"No."
He interrupted.
"The ungrateful one is the woman who slept in silk while my mother scrubbed toilets."
Silence.
Adrian turned to Marco.
"Prepare Mrs. Wolfe's east suite."
Marco blinked.
"The east suite, Boss?"
It was the most beautiful bedroom in the mansion.
Ocean view.
Private terrace.
Fireplace.
The room Adrian's late father had once dreamed of giving Eleanor.
"It should have been hers from the beginning."
"Yes, Boss."
"And Lily."
"Convert the library next door into a children's room."
The little girl looked up in surprise.
"My own room?"
Adrian knelt in front of her.
"If you like pink..."
"We'll paint it pink."
"If you like blue..."
"We'll paint it blue."
"If you like dinosaurs..."
"We'll fill it with dinosaurs."
Lily smiled for the first time all day.
"Can I have books?"
Adrian's expression softened.
"As many as you can read."
She threw her tiny arms around his neck.
Without thinking...
He hugged her back.
Eleanor quietly wiped away tears.
"My sweet boy..."
"I didn't raise you for this."
He looked at her gently.
"You raised me to protect family."
"I forgot what that meant."
"I'm remembering now."
Across the room, Cassandra watched in disbelief.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
She had spent years convincing Adrian that emotions were weakness.
That compassion made leaders vulnerable.
Now one frightened little girl had broken through walls that years of violence never could.
Desperate, Cassandra pulled out her phone.
"You'll regret this."
She dialed quickly.
"Dad?"
Her voice immediately became shaky.
"Adrian's gone insane."
"He's throwing me out."
"Come here."
"He needs to be reminded who he's dealing with."
She ended the call with a satisfied smile.
"My father is on his way."
"He'll fix this."
Adrian didn't react.
Instead, he looked toward the front gate cameras displayed on another monitor.
A black convoy had already appeared.
Three luxury SUVs rolled through the gates.
Marco frowned.
"Boss..."
"They're here."
Less than two minutes later, the massive front doors opened.
Richard Hale strode inside wearing an expensive navy suit.
Silver-haired.
Perfect posture.
The kind of man who had spent forty years telling rooms exactly how things would happen.
Behind him came four attorneys.
Two corporate executives.
And a personal assistant carrying a briefcase.
Richard didn't greet anyone.
He looked directly at Adrian.
"I hear you've made an emotional decision."
Adrian met his gaze.
"I made a final decision."
Richard smiled politely.
"My daughter can be difficult."
"But marriages require compromise."
"I'm prepared to discuss a settlement."
Adrian shook his head.
"There is nothing to discuss."
Richard's smile faded.
"You should think carefully."
"Our families have signed contracts worth nearly two billion dollars."
"You walk away..."
"...those contracts disappear."
Before Adrian could answer...
A weak voice came from the staircase.
"You must be Mr. Hale."
Everyone turned.
Eleanor stood there.
Her hands were still red from the cleaning chemicals.
Her simple clothes were stained.
But her back was straight.
Richard barely looked at her.
"I assume you're Adrian's mother."
"I am."
He sighed impatiently.
"I'm sorry you've been uncomfortable."
"I'm sure there were misunderstandings."
"We can arrange a generous monthly allowance for you and the child."
"You won't have to concern yourself with family business."
The room fell silent.
Eleanor looked at the wealthy businessman for a long moment.
Then she asked softly,
"Mr. Hale..."
"If someone offered money..."
"...to replace your mother's dignity..."
"...would you take it?"
Richard opened his mouth.
May you like
But for the first time in years...
He had no answer.
