CHAPTER 5 — A MOTHER'S TRUTH

CHAPTER 5 — A MOTHER'S TRUTH
The silence that followed Eleanor's question seemed to swallow the entire mansion.
Richard Hale stared at her.
No one had spoken to him that way in decades.
Finally, he cleared his throat.
"This isn't about dignity."
"It's about resolving an unfortunate misunderstanding."
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"A misunderstanding?"
She slowly removed the bandage wrapped around one of her hands.
The skin beneath was raw, red, and blistered from days of harsh cleaning chemicals.
She looked directly at Richard.
"Did your daughter misunderstand when she made me scrub toilets?"
"Did she misunderstand when she threw food into the trash while my granddaughter cried from hunger?"
"Or when she said old people should know their place?"
Richard's expression hardened.
He turned toward Cassandra.
"Is this true?"
Cassandra answered too quickly.
"Of course not."
"She's exaggerating."
"They're trying to turn Adrian against me."
Richard looked at his daughter for several long seconds.
Then he noticed something.
Not one employee had spoken in her defense.
Not one.
Instead, every servant stood quietly behind Eleanor.
The butler.
The chef.
The gardeners.
The maids.
Even the security guards.
An uncomfortable feeling settled into his chest.
Adrian broke the silence.
"Marco."
Marco stepped forward carrying another tablet.
"I anticipated they might deny everything."
"I prepared copies."
He handed one to Richard.
Inside were screenshots from the security footage.
Dates.
Times.
Photographs.
Every insult.
Every order.
Every act of humiliation.
Richard flipped through the pages.
His face grew paler with each image.
Finally, he stopped at a photograph of Lily kneeling on the kitchen floor, picking up pieces of bread from the trash while Eleanor tried to stop her.
Richard slowly lowered the tablet.
"Cassandra..."
His voice was no longer confident.
"What have you done?"
She grabbed his arm.
"Dad, don't believe this."
"They're manipulating you."
"I'm your daughter."
"You have to stand with me."
Richard pulled his arm away.
"No."
His voice was calm.
"You asked me to defend you."
"I came expecting a business dispute."
"What I found..."
He looked toward Eleanor.
"...is something far worse."
For the first time that evening, Cassandra looked frightened.
"Dad..."
"You don't understand."
Richard interrupted.
"I understand perfectly."
He turned to Adrian.
"I owe your family an apology."
Adrian remained expressionless.
"The apology belongs to my mother."
Richard walked toward Eleanor.
Then, to everyone's astonishment, the powerful businessman bowed his head.
"Mrs. Wolfe..."
"I cannot undo what happened."
"But I am deeply ashamed that my daughter treated you this way."
Eleanor gently touched his shoulder.
"Stand up."
"You don't owe me humiliation."
"You owe your daughter honesty."
Richard slowly faced Cassandra again.
"When your mother died..."
"I promised myself I'd never raise someone who looked down on another human being."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"I failed."
Cassandra stared at him as if he were a stranger.
"So you're choosing them?"
Richard shook his head.
"I'm choosing what's right."
"No amount of money can purchase character."
"No family name can replace it."
"And tonight..."
"You lost both."
Her breathing became uneven.
"You can't abandon me."
"I'm your daughter!"
"And that's why this hurts."
Richard closed his eyes for a moment.
"When this is over..."
"You'll leave the country."
"You'll receive no position in Hale Capital."
"No trust fund."
"No family representation."
"You'll earn your own living."
Just as everyone absorbed his words...
A loud clap echoed through the entrance hall.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Everyone turned.
An elderly woman in an elegant cream-colored suit stood in the open doorway, leaning lightly on a polished cane.
Her silver hair was perfectly styled.
Her eyes were sharp as glass.
Behind her stood two assistants.
Richard's face drained of color.
"Mother..."
Cassandra whispered in disbelief.
"Grandmother?"
The old woman stepped inside, her gaze sweeping across the room before settling on Eleanor.
Then she smiled warmly.
"Eleanor..."
"It's been nearly thirty years."
Eleanor gasped.
"Margaret?"
Adrian frowned.
"You know each other?"
The elderly woman chuckled softly.
"Oh, yes."
She looked at Adrian with kind eyes.
"Your mother and I worked together in a small diner long before either of us had money."
"When my husband lost everything..."
"Your mother secretly brought food to my children every single week."
Eleanor looked embarrassed.
"It wasn't much."
"It was everything."
Margaret corrected gently.
Then she turned toward her granddaughter.
"So tell me, Cassandra..."
"The woman who once fed this family when we had nothing..."
"You made her clean your toilets?"
Cassandra couldn't answer.
Margaret's expression turned to ice.
"I've spent fifty years building the Hale name."
"You nearly destroyed it in fifty days."
She raised her cane and pointed toward the front door.
"Leave."
"Not tomorrow."
"Not after an argument."
"Now."
Cassandra looked desperately between her father...
Her grandmother...
And Adrian.
No one moved to help her.
