CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN MY FATHER'S SAFE

CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN MY FATHER'S SAFE

The discovery of my name inside Case 47A changed everything.

I was no longer just a witness.

I was part of the investigation.

The FBI obtained warrants for every financial record, phone log, and legal document connected to me over the previous five years.

Within forty-eight hours they reached a surprising conclusion.

Someone had built an entire false identity around me.

Credit applications.

Electronic signatures.

Letters.

Medical statements.

Even notarized affidavits.

All convincing.

None authentic.

Whoever had done it had access to information only someone close to me should have known.

Then my father called.

"Sarah... I think there's something in your mother's old safe."

My mother had died six years earlier.

The old fireproof safe had remained untouched in my parents' basement ever since.

That evening Bennett and I drove there.

Inside were passports.

Insurance papers.

Family photographs.

Nothing unusual.

Until my father handed me a sealed envelope with my name written across the front.

"I never opened it."

The handwriting belonged to my mother.

With shaking hands, I unfolded the letter.

Sarah,

If you're reading this, someone has finally uncovered what I was too frightened to report.

Three years ago, a woman came to me asking questions about you and Colette. She claimed she worked for an adoption agency. She wanted copies of family documents, signatures, and old photographs. When I refused, she warned me that innocent children would disappear if I didn't cooperate.

I was terrified.

I secretly copied everything she asked for instead of giving her the originals. I hid those copies in this safe.

If anything ever happens, give them to the authorities.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner.

Love,
Mom

Beneath the letter was a folder.

Inside were surveillance photos.

Receipts.

Business cards.

One photograph made Agent Cross immediately stand up when she saw it.

Elaine Mercer.

The missing founder of Hope Tomorrow.

Standing beside Victor.

And beside them...

A younger woman smiling into the camera.

Agent Cross whispered,

"We finally know who replaced Elaine."

The woman was identified within an hour.

Vivian Ross.

A licensed adoption consultant.

Never previously connected to the case.

Until now.

That same night, agents arrested Vivian as she attempted to board a private flight to Belize.

She refused to answer questions.

Until Agent Cross placed Lillian's pink backpack on the interview table.

Vivian's confidence disappeared.

"You found the archive."

Cross nodded.

"Where is the child?"

May you like

Vivian looked away.

"You'll never reach her in time."
