CHAPTER 6 — THE ORPHANAGE

CHAPTER 6 — THE ORPHANAGE
The building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Overgrown weeds.
Rusted playground equipment swaying in the wind.
No electricity.
No signs of life.
Yet thermal drones detected movement underground.
Agent Cross gave the order.
"Breach."
Federal agents forced open the basement entrance.
The smell hit first.
Dust.
Mold.
Bleach.
Fresh bleach.
Someone had cleaned recently.
Flashlights swept across the underground rooms.
Old offices.
Storage areas.
Rows of empty filing cabinets.
Then...
A steel security door.
Locked from the inside.
The tactical team forced it open.
Beyond it sat an archive room.
Hundreds of cardboard boxes.
Thousands of files.
Every box carried a child's name.
Not adoption records.
Inventories.
Children categorized by age.
Hair color.
Eye color.
Medical history.
Potential adoptive placements.
I felt sick.
"They catalogued them..."
Agent Cross whispered.
"They treated children like property."
One young agent called out.
"Ma'am!"
Everyone hurried over.
Inside a locked cabinet sat dozens of hard drives.
Laptops.
Passports.
Birth certificates.
Forged court orders.
Then...
One small pink backpack.
Colette stopped breathing.
She recognized it immediately.
"Lillian..."
Inside the backpack were tiny sneakers.
A coloring book.
A stuffed rabbit.
The same rabbit delivered anonymously to the FBI.
But no child.
Only another note.
Too late.
Suddenly a radio crackled.
"Vehicle leaving the north road!"
Agents rushed outside.
A black van burst through the trees.
Two tactical SUVs gave chase.
The pursuit lasted nearly twenty minutes before the van crashed into a roadside ditch.
Three suspects were arrested.
The driver.
A woman using four different identities.
And an elderly accountant connected to Hope Tomorrow Foundation.
But the rear cargo compartment was empty.
Whatever—or whoever—they had been transporting was gone.
Late that evening investigators began searching the seized computers.
One encrypted folder finally opened.
Its title froze everyone in the room.
ACTIVE CHILDREN
Thirty-seven names appeared.
Thirty-six were marked Closed.
Only one remained highlighted in green.

Agent Cross slowly looked up from the screen.
"She's alive."
Colette covered her mouth as sobs overtook her.
For the first time in three years...
There was proof.
Lillian had survived.
But before anyone could celebrate, another line appeared as the decryption finished.
Emergency Contact Authorized: Sarah Whitmore.
The room fell completely silent.
Every eye turned toward me.
Including Bennett's.
I whispered the only words I could manage.
"I've never seen this before..."
Then Agent Cross quietly replied,
"I believe you."
May you like
She paused, staring at the screen.
"But someone wanted this child connected to you from the very beginning... and now we have to find out why."
