CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL'S VOICE

CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL'S VOICE

I replayed the voicemail twelve times.

Each time, the same four words.

"Is my mommy crying?"

No background noise.

No adults speaking.

Just the hesitant voice of a little girl who sounded no older than five.

The FBI traced the number within minutes.

It led nowhere.

A disposable internet calling service.

Created less than an hour earlier.

Deleted six minutes after the call ended.

Someone had planned every second.

By sunrise, Bennett and I were sitting inside the FBI field office.

Special Agent Evelyn Cross spread dozens of photographs across a conference table.

"This organization operated for nearly seven years," she said.

"They specialized in fraudulent adoptions, fake charities, forged medical records, and identity laundering."

She slid one photo toward me.

Victor.

Another.

Dr. Nathaniel Harmon.

Another.

A smiling woman I had never seen before.

"This is Elaine Mercer."

"Who is she?"

"The real founder of Hope Tomorrow Foundation."

"And?"

"She's been missing for four years."

My stomach tightened.

"You think Victor killed her?"

Agent Cross didn't answer.

Instead, she opened another file.

Across the top, in bold black letters:

CASE 47A — RESTRICTED

"I normally wouldn't show civilians this."

She looked directly at me.

"But your name appears in it."

My heart stopped.

"My name?"

Cross turned the first page.

There it was.

Sarah Whitmore

Interviewed.

Three years earlier.

I stared in disbelief.

"I've never been interviewed by the FBI."

"We know."

"So why is my name here?"

Cross slowly slid another page toward me.

It wasn't my signature.

Someone had forged it.

The interview transcript claimed I had personally verified Colette's emotional instability.

It described her as delusional.

Obsessive.

Dangerous.

Someone who imagined children that didn't exist.

Every statement was attributed to me.

Every page carried a signature that looked almost identical to mine.

Except it wasn't.

Someone had spent years preparing this.

Bennett looked horrified.

"This is identity fraud."

Agent Cross nodded.

"Professional identity fraud."

I whispered,

"Who would do this?"

She answered without hesitation.

"Someone who needed the courts to believe Colette was mentally unfit."

Colette sat silently across the room.

When she finally saw the forged documents, tears streamed down her face.

"I knew someone lied."

She looked at me with unbearable sadness.

"I just never imagined it was supposed to be you."

I couldn't speak.

For twenty years I had defended her.

And somewhere...

Someone had been using my name to destroy her.

That afternoon another surprise arrived.

Dr. Harmon had been found.

Alive.

Barely.

A hiker discovered him unconscious inside an abandoned hunting cabin nearly thirty miles from Lake Morrison.

He had been drugged.

Dehydrated.

And handcuffed to an iron pipe.

When he regained consciousness in intensive care, the FBI questioned him immediately.

His first sentence stunned everyone.

"I tried to stop them."

Hours later Bennett and I stood outside Harmon's hospital room.

He looked exhausted.

Older than he had only days earlier.

He motioned for us to come closer.

"I owe both of you an apology."

Bennett folded his arms.

"You helped fake a pregnancy."

Harmon closed his eyes.

"I know."

"Why?"

"They had leverage."

"What kind of leverage?"

"My granddaughter."

The room fell silent.

"They threatened to take her if I refused."

He swallowed painfully.

"So I signed paperwork."

"I approved fake medical records."

"I confirmed imaginary prenatal visits."

"I became part of their operation."

His voice broke.

"But I never knew about the child."

"What child?" I asked.

"Lillian."

He looked directly at Colette.

"I swear to God...I believed they were only stealing money."

Then he reached beneath his pillow.

The nurses hadn't found the envelope hidden there.

"I kept copies."

Inside were photographs.

Shipping invoices.

Financial records.

And one folded map.

Red circles marked six locations across three states.

One location had been crossed out in black ink.

Another had today's date written beside it.

Lakewood Children's Home.

Closed six years earlier.

Agent Cross immediately called the tactical team.

Within thirty minutes, federal vehicles were racing toward the abandoned orphanage.

None of us expected what they would find.
