CHAPTER 6 — The Mastermind Behind the Empire

CHAPTER 6 — The Mastermind Behind the Empire

The indictment against Vanessa Hale dominated every national news network for a week.

Attempted murder.

Corporate fraud.

Forgery.

Money laundering.

Witness intimidation.

The charges alone carried enough prison time to ensure she would never walk free again.

But Agent Mercer wasn't celebrating.

Neither was I.

Because one question still had no answer.

Why?

Stealing Hale Industries was worth billions.

But the burner phones revealed transactions far larger than anything connected to our company.

Someone else was pulling the strings.

Three days later, Mercer called me.

"We need you in Washington."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"We decrypted Victor Sloan's encrypted hard drives."

A pause.

"You were never the target."

Inside FBI headquarters, Mercer projected dozens of financial charts across a conference room wall.

Money moved through shell corporations in the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, Singapore, and Dubai.

Billions of dollars.

Hundreds of companies.

Dozens of wealthy families.

Richard Hale wasn't the only victim.

"This wasn't about one inheritance," Mercer explained.

"It was an acquisition strategy."

He pointed to a list of names.

Powerful CEOs.

A shipping magnate.

A pharmaceutical founder.

A casino owner.

Every one of them had suffered a mysterious illness, suspicious accident, or sudden mental decline before control of their companies shifted to relatives or spouses.

"Someone has been hunting billionaires."

The room fell silent.

Mercer clicked to the next slide.

One photograph appeared.

A silver-haired man smiling beside senators, governors, and Fortune 500 executives.

"Meet Adrian Blackwood."

The name meant nothing to me.

"It should."

Mercer zoomed in.

"He owns no companies."

"No public assets."

"No political office."

"But every financial trail eventually leads back to him."

Richard leaned forward.

"He's invisible."

"Exactly."

Blackwood never signed contracts.

Never appeared on corporate filings.

Never accepted official positions.

He simply arranged for desperate, greedy people to destroy wealthy families from the inside.

Vanessa had been one of his recruits.

"So where is he now?" I asked.

Mercer's expression darkened.

"Missing."

That night I returned to Dallas.

The Hale mansion finally felt peaceful again.

Dad was slowly recovering.

Maria supervised his medication.

The nurse smiled for the first time since I'd arrived.

It almost felt normal.

Until I found the envelope.

It sat on my old bedroom pillow.

No stamp.

No fingerprints.

Just my name.

Emma.

Inside was a single black playing card.

The King of Spades.

On the back, one sentence had been handwritten.

"You exposed one queen. The king is still on the board."

No signature.

I immediately called Mercer.

Twenty minutes later the FBI swept the property.

Nothing.

No cameras.

No fingerprints.

No DNA.

Whoever delivered the message had walked through one of the most heavily guarded estates in Texas without leaving a trace.

Mercer stared at the card.

"He knows where you sleep."

The next morning another discovery changed everything.

Arthur Benson called.

"Emma..."

His voice shook.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"The day Richard signed the forged will..."

He hesitated.

"There was another man in the room."

"You never mentioned that."

"I couldn't remember."

"What did he look like?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Tall."

"Gray hair."

"Blue tie."

"He never spoke."

"But Vanessa treated him like she worked for him."

Mercer froze.

"Blue tie?"

Arthur nodded.

Mercer immediately pulled out a photograph.

Adrian Blackwood.

Arthur pointed without hesitation.

"That's him."

May you like

For the first time...

The ghost had a witness.
